Join the Walla Walla Symphony  under the baton of Dr. Paul Luongo for this year’s Free Family Concert and “Foodraiser”!  The concert is titled “Music in the World Around Us” and it will explore music in nature, music and animals, music in youth and music as celebration!  The performance will feature Walla Walla’s own Ballet Folklorico and 13-year-old cellist Valeria Heredia.

No tickets are needed for this event.  Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation. All proceeds benefit Blue Mountain Action Council’s Food Bank.

Students Participate in Foodraiser

Forty-four Loomis Chaffee students raised awareness about hunger and helped to alleviate the situation by participating in the annual Rachel’s Table Foodraiser at Big Y in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, on Sunday, November 10.

“With the holidays right around the corner, it was great to see so many students helping others have a bright start to their holiday season,” said senior Whitney Smith, a member of the Pelican Service Organization and assistant to the Loomis director of community service. “It’s important for students to understand that even a seemingly small act such as donating food can have a huge impact on someone’s well-being.”

Organized by the Pelican Service Organization, groups of four students were given $75 to spend throughout the store on food for the hungry. The groups competed to save the most money or to take the highest percentage off their food bill, which resulted in a larger donation to the various recipient organizations.

“The foodraiser is a really fun way to participate in community service and teaches students how to shop efficiently and smartly,” Eliana Zhou, co-president of the Pelican Service Organization, said. “I hope students realize the importance of charity and understand how much it really means to our society.”

The groups saved 33 percent to 56 percent off of their total purchase, and $825 worth of food was donated to Providence Ministries in Holyoke, Massachusetts, which serves Kate’s Kitchen, Margaret’s Pantry, and Loreto House; and to Open Pantry Community Services in Springfield, Massachusetts, which serves Open Pantry Emergency Food Pantry, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, and Greenwich Teen Living Program.
