He lifted her from the ground, shifting her in his arms until he had a decent grip on her, and then he was carrying her. Bucky very nearly seemed to just ignore the chaos happening around them. None of it mattered. The only thing that mattered was getting Shay to safety.

Bucky was used to searching among colorful merchant stalls to make sure his best friend hadn’t picked another fight; he was also used to finding her with a bloody nose, or a black eye, her hands curled into fists. No matter how many times it happened or how many times he warned her to just let things go, she insisted on getting into more trouble than he could pull her out of all at once. If he didn’t LIKE keeping an eye on her so much, he might even be pissed.

He didn’t REMEMBER her but he felt like he should have. Perhaps that was a factor in his decision to spare her; his decision not to cut her down where she stood despite the fact she was a Resistance member. He did not have a cold heart, a cruel heart.
