for hazel? cade made living in that home become bearable. her father hated her, wanted nothing to do with her even more so after her mother's untimely death. and even though emrys was there, the girl was utterly alone for so long. starter to only speak when she needed to, kept to herself often enough. but when cade came on board to the home things changed a little. he was nice to her, never once treated her any differently and for that she was eternally grateful. slowly he became someone she could trust. someone to lean on and someone she quietly admired from afar. it was hard not to. this handsome, older gentleman who seemed to hate everyone but her. it was impossible for her to not feel a certain way towards him. more so when he'd began teaching her little ways to defend herself. taught her how to hold a gun properly, how to shoot it heaven forbid she needed to. she didn't like it, but she retained that knowledge, and he'd put a pistol in her nightside table just in case.
this sort of thing, it didn't happen often, the only time hazel had been part of something like this was when her dad and uncle had been killed. but she and emrys had hid. she didn't have that luxury this time. not when it happened so fast. not when that man burst into her room so fast, wielding that knife with such a sinister smile. hazel panicked, unable to think clearly for a moment and it gave than man a chance to lunge at her, grab at her and try to wrestle her to the ground. but she was a tough cookie, fought it hard enough that the man's waving hands caused that knife to slip across her cheek. her wits came back to her with the pain, rushing for her nightside table and pulling that gun out so fast, clicking the safety off. that man, he laughed and took a few more steps toward her. hazel was shaking, pure fear and adrenaline running through her veins and before she knew it she'd pulled the trigger when he'd gotten too close. close enough that the blood spatter hit her and the man dropped straight down onto her bedroom floor. she stared, wide eyed in horror at what she'd just done, when a voice came through to her. she startled, gun pointing towards the voice. it took a moment but her mind registered that it was cade, bloody nose and all, and her panted breaths filled the sound in the room. 'c-cade,' she stuttered, but she still had the gun raised with shaking hands, unable to lower it. she should be relieved to see him but she's not. she's horrified at what she'd had to do. 'he-- he came at me i--i killed him.' and the panic is clear in her voice. she hadn't wanted to kill him but he was dead on her floor in a pool of crimson.
