so.
umm i wanted to type this out a while ago but now i’ve fully formed my thinks on what to type! last weekend was my last state. it went pretty well for me, all things considered. this year wasn’t too hot for me, competitive-wise but a good year because i competed with and against some amazing people. saturday was really fun and it made me think a lot. I saw some pieces i hadn’t seen before this year, and it got me to thinking.
why do we perform what we perform?
yes, sometimes some lucky people have coaches that pick stuff out for them. but why do they stick with it? y’know people kinda put aside “intros” as unimportant. but they are (supposed) to reveal why the piece is important. there is such a difference of performance between people that are invested in their message rather than people that just do it to do it. sure you have more freedom when creating POIs/poetry programs, but like you have to find an aspect of something in a character or story to relate to that makes you stick with it. you have to find a part of yourself in whatever you are doing. like, yes it’s all acting, but sometimes the reality in acting comes from a connection.
so like even if you aren’t doing well competitively, your message is being heard. that’s the important part. it sometimes seems like people who are consistently in finals are there because of many aspects. i can tell you no matter how far you get, you are changing something. in every round, every judge you perform to, each competitor, each random parent watching. please care about this activity on more than a superficial level. i cannot tell you the places i’ve gotten (or not gotten) at every tournament i’ve been to. here’s what i can tell you: i have learned so so so much. so thanks.
