☁ = being caught in the middle a storm with them
Typically, something like rain would be of no consequence to the chaotic criminal, but on today of all days, it couldn’t feel like anything other than a targeted attack from the Big Guy upstairs — or just MOTHER NATURE herself, saying ❛ fuck you, nicolette ❜ to her face. It was stupid, and she would never admit it to anyone ( she could hardly admit it to herself ), but deep down she had been making a conscious EFFORT lately, be it with her appearance, her personality, or even her habits. True, it was only every so often, and only with a few select individuals, but it was an attempt nonetheless.
It wasn’t a pressing, world-ending matter, but making a fairly good impression on her newfound comrades was something that Nicolette had begun to think twice about if she was in a good mood and really felt like it. She hadn’t been the one to originally seek out companionship — simply made a brief comment in passing, receiving a light proposal in response — but she certainly hadn’t turned it down, either. In fact, she later encouraged it during another unimportant, casual exchange. Apparently that was all it took, and they’d found themselves in each other’s company a handful of times after that.
If not for the guarded walls around her heart and the insistent denial of crushing loneliness, she might’ve called them FRIENDS, but the very thought felt like a slap in the face. She loathed to think she was weak enough to really want such things, so instead, she didn’t call them anything. It was just a DISTRACTION, or a way to pass the time. That was enough, for now.
❝ Well this is just GREAT. All that time spent doing my hair this afternoon, and for what? Nothing! ❞ The exclamation comes suddenly as a pair stands side by side under a cafe veranda, having only just finished their lunch when they’d stepped outside to see the storm raging over the city. Of course, being as chaotic as they were, neither had bothered to check the weather report, let alone bring along an umbrella.
❝ There goes Wisteria Square! There’s no way they’d still hold a concert in THIS weather! Aaahhh BULLSHIT! ❞ Childishly stomping in the puddle gathering under their safe haven from the sidewalk, Nicolette offers an angry huff at Rei’s attempts to placate her. She doesn’t understand why she isn’t mad too! The plans they made ( that she’d been looking forward to ) were ruined. ❝ What’re we supposed to do now? ❞ If it were up to her, she’d sit there and keep pouting all night just to spite the city for literally raining on her parade, but it’s Rei that snaps her out of it.
❝ Oh come on, don’t CRY, we can still have a good time! ❞ She says, flashing her an easy, lopsided smile — ever the unconcerned ray of positivity that directly challenged Nicolette’s selfish pessimism.
That was all it took, really, to light the fire in her blood. It felt like a CHALLENGE.
❝ Oho~ I see! Well fine! If it’s so easy, then here, ❞ she moves, firmly grasping the other’s wrist in her hand, and offers but a single, mischievous smirk before running forward, pulling Rei along with her out from under their safety and into the pouring rain. ❝ HOW’S THIS FOR FUN!! ❞ Is all she shouts before dissolving into breathless laughter, continuing their journey into the city and the storm, hand in hand.
