wrt the midwifery and medicine thing: back then modern medicine was trying to take hold as well, but those practices weren't as safe or effective even though they required a lot of training. a lot of the "hunting" of folk doctors was due to trying to dissuade people from using their services and turn instead to "real" medicine. however, while folk medicine and witchcraft DO intersect not all folk doctors were witches.
