Featured Article: Apocalypse AU
This week’s Featured Article is all about the end of the world! An Apocalypse AU is a trope where a fanwork is set during or after an apocalyptic event and the characters must survive harsh and devastating conditions. This trope is often associated with fanfiction (sometimes called Apocafics), but it appears across all types of fanworks.
Some fandoms have built-in apocalypse potential that characters fight against in canon. In those cases, the apocalypse is typically averted. For example, in the TV series Forever Knight, an asteroid threatens Earth in one episode; although it does not collide with Earth in the show, some canon-divergent AU fanworks often explore what might have happened should that apocalyptic event have occurred. Other fandoms, like Jeremiah or Battlestar Galactica, are already set in an apocalyptic setting in canon, so fanworks that explore this are usually not labeled as an alternate universe unless a new, different apocalypse is created.
These fanworks explore common tropes like survival, found family, and hurt/comfort. Characters search for food and shelter, fight creatures like feral animals or zombies, build communities, and support each other through shared trauma. Apocalypse AUs can also serve as vehicles for political and social commentary, reflecting current societal fears even when set in distant futures or faraway universes.

This list, not mine, has an error on it. Queen of the Damned is a masterpiece. Also it leaves off the vampire detective series Forever Knight, which is heresy, even if this list is just about movies and not vampire tv. Forever Knight should be on every 'best of' list. It's the best.
Patrician Grill (Forever Knight, due South filming location) sold, closed; sign coming down
The Patrician Grill in Toronto - filming location for some pivotal scenes in the 90s TV series Forever Knight and due South - closed on May 9, after the owners announced in April that they sold the restaurant so they could finally retire. It has been in the same family since 1967, serving local patrons (and as a filming location for the Canadian film industry in Toronto).
Tom Melissis (who played Dewey in S3(/S4) dS) shared photos of the iconic Patrician Grill sign being taken down on the Due South By South East Facebook group.
Truly the end of an era.

Latest fanfics: a writer meme
Rules: post the first sentence of your latest 10 fanfics, then (attempt to) tag 10 people. I was kindly tagged by @oldshrewsburyian. This list skips 2025 entirely and goes back to 2023, which is very funny because there are about 250,000 words of Dark Shadows fanfic on my laptop that are too esoteric to share, so it's not like I wasn't writing during the gap, I just wasn't posting anything.
"Opening the door of Crowley’s insistently conjured suite at the Tadfield Inn, Aziraphale saw a sitting room with overstuffed chairs and a circular table, with an attached kitchenette that appeared to be firmly stuck in 1952." Latest chapter of The Patience of Angels, Good Omens
"The road ahead seemed absolutely endless, and the deserts that stretched out on either side of the infinite highway under the immense night skies beckoned all the way to the dark horizon." No Road to Lead Us Back, Good Omens
"In a quiet, mostly darkened bookshop in Soho, an angel was sitting alone, intent on getting quite drunk." From Your Lips to God's Ears, Good Omens
"Crowley looked up at Aziraphale as Maggie and Nina walked out." Irregular, Good Omens
"Oblivion isn’t so bad, Aziraphale thought. For one thing, it smells like a bookshop." Skin Horses, Good Omens
"Nick sniffed tentatively at the plastic cup that he had been handed, and grimaced." Just a Joke, Forever Knight
"The cold receded slowly from Maia's fingertips, stripped of their two pairs of gloves and wrapped around the cup of steaming hot tea that Vedero's household servants had prepared, ready and waiting for the emperor and his sister to return from their observance of the stars." The Star's Children, The Goblin Emperor
"Falling, such as it is, was easy." I Have Set My Eyes on High, Good Omens
“'Well, I think that concludes today’s meeting.'” A King of Infinite Space, Good Omens
"'D'you want to tell me about Lindsay?'" After Everything, Good Omens
This is less exciting of a list than I'd hoped, alas. I've recently reshared a bunch of the older Good Omens stuff, and the Dark Shadows and TMA stuff is apparently further in the back catalog than I'd realized.

Going through some of my old notebooks from the 90s/00s. 😂
First pages of a bunch of different fanfics for a bunch of different fandoms.
I used to post on my geocities page before ffnet existed. Then ffnet. Then LiveJournal. Then Ao3 and Tumblr.
.... I am old.
