Also, I think anyone who stopped being a larrie because of some tweet from Louis, a stunt, an interview, or something like that, never really was one. I became a larrie at 15, I'm almost 22 now, and I can doubt many things, but never that Harry and Louis are together. Anyone with the ability to understand that the industry has historically been cruel to artists (not just Harry and Louis) wouldn't see Larry as something incoherent. When I joined this part of the fandom, there was very good material, many masterposts, videos, images, everything (but I looked for it myself, some current, others from 5 or 6 years ago, but the point was to investigate), which wasn't based on what the fan wanted to believe but on what had actually happened (I even remember seeing how several larries made the effort to debunk what wasn't true so as not to contaminate what was), which is very different from how TikTok or Twitter were handled at that same time. I was very chronically online on the latter and I noticed that sometimes coincidences as small as, for example, colors like green and blue were taken as proof, stripping away all the importance from how many larries for years documented, for example, the tattoos, or the bears, which were actually something significant. Unfortunately, the same people who called everything proof are now antis and hate larries, because they were never part of us, they simply liked the aesthetic of being one, and since it is no longer accepted or popular, they abandoned it and believe that they are heterosexual and are happy with their fake girlfriends, all this after distorting what Larry and being a larrie is so much, to the point that I have seen like 20 ways of being a larrie. (Obviously, I'm generalizing, there may be exceptions, but I've been on the larrie side of TikTok and Twitter so much that to me, it's a way too common behavior there).

Thank you so much for this. I completely agree. The waters are so muddied now with so much lying, endless accounts turning even the most random things into “proof,” and the 20 different ways of being a larrie.

I miss a lot about the way fandom used to be, but especially the way we used to take things seriously.

Fanwork Friday: Dagon (fanzine)

Happy Fanwork Friday! We’re spotlighting the award-winning fanzine Dagon, which centered around the Cthulhu Mythos and Call of Cthulhu RPG, then broadened its scope to include other H.P. Lovecraft and weird fiction works. Over its seven-year run through the 1980s, it enjoyed contributions from several notable horror writers and Lovecraftian scholars.

According to creator Carl Ford, the first issue was made for friends, with ten copies printed in total. By the zine’s final issue, that number had grown to around 500. Regular columns included Mythos fiction recommendations, writings by Call of Cthulhu designer Sandy Peterson, and reader-suggested improvements for the RPG.

Hello Gina, I've been planning to write you this for some days, and now your anon putting in all caps "How painfully obvious it was back then" pushed me.

So one of my friends just discovered Heated Rivalry recently, so when we met a few days ago, we read fandom related posts on different platforms together. One post said "People believing in Consois are as delusional as Larries"

Consois is the ship name of Connor Storrie, who plays Ilya, and Francois Arnaud, who plays Scott in the series. And some fans think they're a couple. I'm not following the actors' private life at all, so I have no idea whether it's true or not, and I definitely don't want to start a debate about this on your blog.

My friend is not in the One Direction, Harry, Louis fandom at all now, but she used to follow 1D from the beginning, although she got uninterested after a while.

But she said immediately "Why are Larries delusional? Harry and Louis were together, I guess they still are, but I'm not sure, I'm not following them anymore."

So, she was in for a ride, I told her everything what happened since, I told her about antis, solos, Bradrry shippers, you name it...

And she was surprised. And although she didn't use the same words as the anon, but for the full circle I use their words, my friend said "But it was painfully obvious back then"

Sorry love, I only just saw this message now.

But, yes. IT WAS SO OBVIOUS. Even when Liam passed and people were coming back to fandom and looking at old videos, there were so many people saying, “oh my god I was so young, I didn’t realize it, but IT WAS SO OBVIOUS THEY WERE TOGETHER.”

And for people who didn’t experience that in real time, who didn’t experience the very obvious ways they communicated with us, it’s really hard to believe that THEY’RE STILL FUCKING DOING IT.

But it’s just too tiring to having that conversation over and over. I’m glad your friend accepted it. That was a huge amount of days to dump on them. 😅

I like to think about how otaku culture got made because Hideaki Anno was a broke college student in the middle of buttfuck nowhere making a 6-minute-long fan animation with two other people (with the occasional assistance of friends) to be played at the Daicon sci-fi convention in 1981. Mind you, this was when sci-fi anime wasn’t even considered “real sci-fi” by a lot of Japanese sci-fi fans, so Anno didn’t think it would do that well. Surprisingly however, the film was so popular and so many copies were sold that Anno and co made enough money to open General Products, a store that sold unlicensed goods related to sci-fi properties. Including the first resin figures, which you had to paint yourself. THEN, the GP merch did so well in only one year that Anno and co opened Daicon Film, their own “animation studio” (broke college students and GP customers working for nothing in a a disused floor of a clothing factory). Daicon Film created another opening animation for the fourth Daicon sci-fi convention, this one even better than the first, featuring a girl in a playboy bunny outfit fighting sci-fi villains from various franchises set to (unlicensed) music. And it was glorious, with production values better than the anime on TV at the time (which was primarily aimed at children), created by anime otaku, for anime otaku. Daicon Films would become Studio Gainax, and what more is there to say?

I got a lot of this from Tim Eldred’s Daicon Chronicles, which is in turn sourced from translated interviews with the original Daicon Films staff. Also links to Daicon 3 (first vid), Daicon 4 (second vid) under the cut:

Visual Kei Fandom on Livejournal- An Archive!

I have been steadfastly working (using the wonderful LJ Archivr tool) to download visual kei Livejournal communities and journals.

Here's a link to a Google Drive containing what I've got so far! One ZIP folder = one comm/journal. Make sure you have enough space to unzip them, especially jrockyaoi, as they're quite large!
