      she lifted the up to her lips, taking a sip as he father walked out of the door. ❝ you didn't have to do that, you know. ❞ she speaks up, setting the ceramic cup onto the table before her. she hunches her shoulders, looking at the other with sheepish eyes. ❝ i mean, ❞ mariana clears her throat. ❝ it was my fault you lost me last night. not because you got distracted... you're gonna get into trouble. ❞

tristan usually avoided drinking --- stepping stones and all that. given his past, it was easily a slippery slope, same as marijuana, but it was new years! the whole point of it was to get drunk and enjoy yourself, and he was home, so what did he have to worry about? brooke loved him, and their family was around, nothing too bad could happen. though to say he was wasted was an understatement, he could feel his spine basically meld with the mattress, blown pupils fixed on the ceiling of what used to be his uncle’s bedroom. “baby, d’you ever think like --- d’you ever think about how things are consumed on like a global scale? like, how many people got wasted tonight? or are like... gettin’ wasted right now... or are like, talkin’ to their girlfriends or their wives or whatever in their grandparent’s house about how things are globally consumed?”

the exhaustion that often came with midnight mass had finally worn off, but in its place came a nervousness that he’d never experienced. it wasn’t that he was anticipating rejection, but he knew it was a possibility ---- and if it were to happen, he didn’t know how he would be able to go from there; especially with their family secretly watching from the kitchen. “i think my nonno always puts out the presents after everyone’s in the car for mass, you know? makes the kids excited.” and now that one of his older cousins had gotten married and the whole shebang, he finally wasn’t the closest thing they had to a kid anymore. “why don’t you go check it out? i’ll put our coats away.” though, he couldn’t care less about the coats, what he cared about was her reaction to the well concealed puppy crate hidden beneath the tree.

truth be told he was exhausted, the long hours from his last assignment --- the trip back home, they’d all taken his toll on him, but he didn’t have it in him to care. really, he was more excited about seeing brooke; the look on her face when he came home was always one of his favorites, and this time around there had been enough time to plan -- her whole office was in on it, and this was going to be something special. tired hands pushed a near-empty mail cart forward, a fresh bouquet of flowers hanging off the edge of the gray metal. “miss harris,” he said, reaching for the flowers as he stopped in front of her desk, “i believe these are yours.”
