no you are totally right. i think a lot of people abuse the ability to crowd source funds just to get stuff they want for funsies (like getting people to pay for their badges), when others use it only when they really need help.
Oh my gosh that badge thing is so frustrating! But you’re totally right! If someone is in crisis and in desperate need and calling on their fanbase is their absolute last hope/resort, it’s great to have a support team and people who’ll encourage you/help you out when you NEED it.
Or even like, humbly asking for assistance with cosplay is a-okay. I had a friend who needed a very specific fabric only sold at some stores, and she asked anyone who could to call their local fabric store to see if they had it and ask to have it held and/or get some for them, but they all got paid back somehow or thanked sincerely. If there’s no symbiosis of sorts, and if these cosplay famers gain a hella lot without giving any compensation (and I’m not talking autographed goods/pictures) to their “sponsors,” you’re right, it’s sucking these people dry and taking advantage of their fans’ loyalty. If these fans know full well what they’re doing and wanna give some cash/gifts without getting anything in return, that is strictly their business, but I dunno man, it just don’t seem right.
