Street Kids Culture

Ephesians 6:1-4 CEVDCUS06 Children, you belong to the Lord, and you do the right thing when you obey your parents. The first commandment with a promise says, “Obey your father and your mother, and you will have a long and happy life.” Parents, don't be hard on your children. Raise them properly. Teach them and instruct them about the Lord. Need I elaborate? There are worse poverty stricken areas in the world that don't share in this awful culture of street kids and the collapse of the family unite. What does the Bible say about it; The problem has a two-folded responsibility; 1. Children obey your parents. 2. Parents don't be hard on your kids, raise them properly and teach them about God. If one party lacks on their side it becomes much more difficult for the other party to sustain their side of responsibility. Sadly, the most two repeated reason for children leaving their homes to live on the street was an alcoholic parent or death of parents. We need to support parents in their difficulties to help them better support their children, and our society owes it to the vulnerable to protect them when their guardians die. Jesus regarded kids very highly, in fact He placed such high value on them that didn't exist in ancient civilisations at the time. Our responsibility as people is to our fellow human kind, the parents are not the enemy note are the children. The enemy is the one that had corrupted the culture and attacked the family unit when it was most vulnerable. I commend the work that Street kids direct are doing here as they extend compassion to the street kids that all others avoid, they also seek to implement long lasting solutions to enable families to reunite as they tackle the current prevailing culture. Silence

Apologies for the 48hr silence. I’ve been sick. To be honest I thought Matt was getting far too much attention having been in hospital for this nasty bug, that I decided to be a part of the party.

So basically in between feeling sorry for myself, dozing in and out of sleep and watching ‘gossip girl’ (which by the way is both totally addictive and total trash) I’ve not had anything interesting to tell you.

The rest of the team however have been hard at it, keeping up with the itinerary. Yesterday they attended an important meeting of El Foro - a multiagency group of those that work with streetkids. It’s really cool that these agencies see the benefit of working together. Then they spent the afternoon and evening doing outreach on the streets. Just hanging out in different zones getting to know some of the vulnerable kids who call the streets their home.

On tuesday night a 17 year old boy was tragically beaten to death here on the streets so that seems to have been the topic of the day yesterday. But before long it will be another kid and then another and then another. His name will be forgotten and his story too will be silent.

It’s currently 2.40am here and I can’t help but think of this young lad. At 17 life should be full of joy and hope and friends and fun. But his life has been silenced….for good.

The Voice, AFE

Five year old Christina; daddy where are you going? Daddy; I'm going to the dump to throw this rubbish. Christina; daddy, can I come please? Daddy; ok. At the dump. Christina; daddy, there are so many kids here. Daddy; so there is, I never noticed. On the way home. Christina; daddy can we pray for the kids? Daddy; of course. Later that day Christina; daddy I think you should help them. Daddy; ok. A day later. Christina; daddy did you help them? Daddy; not yet. Christina; I think you should help them. The next day. Christina; daddy did you start helping the kids. Daddy; not yet. Christina; I think you should ask your boss. Daddy; ok. The following day. Christina; daddy did you speak to Michael (boss)? Daddy; not yet. Christina; I think you should.   This is when Jeony (Christina's daddy) realised this was the voice of God talking to him through his young daughter Christina. This is when the AFE ministry started under a tree, reaching out to Street kids and kids from the dump. #thevoice #forgeglobal

Tegucigalpa's City Dump

DISCLAIMER; NOT FOR THE SENSITIVE READER. Today I had the opportunity to go to Tegucigalpa’s city dump. It was a disgusting place, the scenery was repulsive and the stench was revolting. I’d normally try with everything in me to avoid the people, they could be contaminated! I was expecting all the above, so I had all my emotional defences up and managed not to be shocked. But here comes the however… However, I was not expecting to see animals there, hundreds of vultures, about fifty working cows and fifteen dogs that I could see. Now if you know me, you know that I am not in any way at all an animal guy.. I don’t like them but they seem to love me. But seeing cows that are so uncared for by their owners because their owners are to busy rummaging the newly arrived rubbish. These cows had to fend for themselves, they will try to cut open plastic bags to get to the left over vegetables. It was heart breaking to witness. Or the puppy that was quickly becoming remains by the vultures. You might be asking yourself, but what about the people? Wasn’t your heart broken for them? That’s the question I asked myself. And if you are like me, you are probably thinking, but the animals have no one to care for them, they are innocent in all this. They have no one to love them and show tender love and care to them. Well, as my wife put it, nor do those poor people, we are responsible for not loving them, we are responsible for not caring for them, for not feeding them, for not educating them, for not giving them the basic dignity to live a life worth living. The truth of it is, my conclusion of my thoughts are that I’m being judgemental, I’m blaming the dump people for their means of survival in a world that we contribute to its moral ethics and inhumane treatment of neighbours. Thank God for the likes of street kids direct, of the AFE project, of Dunan Dyason and Joeny and pastor Pinto for their endless efforts in extending love, care and support in a world of where your rubbish is my food. Guatemala City

Blog 1 27/05/2013 We've only been here two days and already my preconceptions of Central America have been shattered. I was expecting a poor country with basic standards of living, people living happily and looking forward to Western support. However, we went to church yesterday VidaReal.tv this is a huge church with family churches in multiple locations across Guatemala City and beyond, they even have a site in the States! This church is a wealthy church, far richer than most British churches, and easily financially richer than the Forge. So they aren't looking for our financial support, that's right they don't want our money. They are also so well equipped for their ministry, so they don't need us teaching them or training them, in fact we've booked in to meet up with one of their senior pastors next week so that we can learn from them! I think it's humble pie time. On another level, there is much we have to offer the Central American Church, you see they still aren't at a place where they see the need to support and help street kids, in fact they are yet to identify with another generation of street kids. These kids that we are heading out to tomorrow morning, are quickly becoming the number one target for gang recruitment. The key question for us at the moment is; how can we transform lives here? if not us then who? and if not now then when?
