Tablecloths, table linen all you need to know.
Confused or bewildered about purchasing a tablecloth? This guide will answer all your questions.
Before you begin your search, measure and then check measure your table. Save these details in the notes section of your phone for future reference - trust me they will come in handy!
It is recommended that you allow a 20cm drop on each side of the table. I personally believe you can get away with 10-15cm but it really comes down to your personal preference. Some people don't like to have a tablecloth skimming their lap.
If you are using a trestle table or would like to hide the legs of your table, a longer overhang will solve your problems.
For a more formal occasion you will need a good quality linen tablecloth in a neutral colour and style. Try white damask or a good quality linen and don't forget linen napkins are a must for a formal do. You can then add in other elements to compliment your linen including beautiful flowers, vases, glasses and tableware. Remember less is more and a refined look takes some discipline.
For a less formal Brunch, BBQ or casual get together, pattern, colour and fun are your friend. Use table linen that will compliment your occasion and setting and play with the different elements until you get the look you are after. The finished table will set the mood and welcome your guests to your home.
For a beautiful tablescape you really need to frame your plate.
Consider your plates, napkins, tablecloth and overall look you are trying to create.
A placemat does not need to be a formal placemat - you could try coloured tissue paper or decorative wrapping paper, over sized napkins, banana leaves, brown paper bags or a mini chalkboard with a special message.
Follow the washing instructions
Table linen is going to get dirty - red wine and food spills are to be expected.
After your guests leave - take your tablecloth off and pre-treat any stains with a spray on stain remover for colours, follow the supplied washing instructions or if in doubt wash on a cold delicate cycle. For stubborn stains soaking may be required but again check the washing instructions before you do this.
The lifespan of your table linen will really come down to a little care from you.
