The Fourth Annual Miniboone Holiday Shindig Is Upon Us

There's nothing more natural than celebrating the onset of winter by crowding into a basement, mildly or non-mildly intoxicating yourself, and enjoying some amplified music while wearing a stupid hat. Here at Miniboone, we honored to provide an opportunity for this sort of celebration for a fourth straight year, on Thursday, December 18th. Our friends over at Cake Shop will be hosting this year, and they have a large supply of "yule", "wassail", and "whiskey booze" so things will certainly go off with nary a hitch. 

In addition to the fine, fine music of Wilder Maker and Old Monk, this year's party will include the first, and perhaps only, appearance of the Useless Family Holiday All Star Band, playing only the greatest and most easy to arrange holiday classics. Expect familiar friends and special guests on a variety of instruments and vocal styles, as well as probably too many sleigh bells. Also Doug will make egg nog as usual. A true Christmas miracle, basically.

Looking for some laughs as you're coming off your post-holiday weekend and into real life? Look no further than The Spit Take from BTR's comedy camp to satisfy that funny bone.

George Flanagan sits down with Bill Stiteler for the second installment of The Spit Take for some hard hitting Q&A action(quipping and antics). Besides being a comedian, Bill has also been churning out hilarious Vines over the last year winning himself over 50,000 followers. They discuss his Vine beginnings,some of his more fervant fans -- and even make time for Bill to do some freestyling during a "chillwave break."

I caught the Brooklyn-based trio Sharkmuffin during a hot summer night at Fort Useless, and was impressive by their energy -- at one point, their lead vocalist was standing on her amplifier and wandering around the DIY art space/performance space. Sonically, their sound pulled together elements of punk, noise and prog rock. In particularly, several songs employed the use of a theremin, which doesn't come up too often at most of the live shows that I go to -- with the exception of the Octopus Project, maybe. 

In a relatively short period of time, Sharkmuffin has become a national indie rock darling -- Alternative Press will be featuring them in their "100 Bands You Should Know" series and they've received praise from the likes of Paste Magazine, Bust Magazine, and the Deli Magazine. 

Their latest effort 1097 is straightforward, power chord rock in the vein of Hole, and Is Is and Fever to Tell-era Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as you'll hear on the EP's first single, "Quarter Machine." a pummeling song that kicks ass and takes names. 

The trio was recently out in Los Angeles for a stint of shows with Patty Schemel of Hole, and are returning home for a big home coming show at Piano's tomorrow and it should kick ass. 

Sharkmuffin had a sound that was much more interesting, as it had elements of metal, prog rock and noise. And whenever a band brings out a theremin, I’m usually impressed.,

XNY show description from the opening at Fort Useless in Brooklyn, NY.

Daina Higgins is a painter and Bryan Bruchman is a photographer. Both were long-time residents of New York City before moving away to other cities -- Daina to Philadelphia, PA, and Bryan to Portland, ME. With the idea in mind that living in NYC can dramatically shape the way a person views other cities, this joint exhibition focuses primarily on works that portray the cities that each called home after leaving NY.

These photos will be on exhibit at Pinecone + Chickadee in Portland, ME, starting during the First Friday Art Walk on December 7, 2012.
