* * * April 1, 2015: Key Decision Point for Legacy Trail Extension * * *
Next stop: downtown Sarasota!
The Feasibility Study to Extend The Legacy Trail to downtown Sarasota will be discussed by the Sarasota County Commissioners at their April 1 meeting. It is important for everyone that supports the Trail Extension to attend this meeting and show your silent but visible support by wearing your yellow Trail Extension shirt. We want the Commissioners to see a lot of yellow in the audience!
This Feasibility Study discussion is scheduled for the morning session which begins at 9 am Wednesday April 1 at the Commission Chambers – First Floor – County Administration Center – 1660 Ringling Blvd – Downtown Sarasota. There will likely be numerous items on the agenda, and we will not know the order of topics, so please plan to be there for the 9am start. We hope the County Commissioners will take the next step forward, which we believe centers on commissioning an independent property appraisal of the rail corridor in coordination with CSX Corporation, the current property owner, and the Trust for Public Land, which offers a wealth of experience in acquiring private land for public use. TPL negotiated the 2004 sale of the rail corridor from CSX to Sarasota County that became The Legacy Trail. If you need to buy a yellow Trail Extension shirt please contact MJ Rouvet (Venice area) 941-484-8964
or Chuck Butterfield (Sarasota area) 941-408-3979

Field & Stream Hero for a Day at Wildflower Preserve - March 29, 2014
Wildflower is one of limited number of sites around the country selected as part of Field & Stream’s conservation “Hero for a Day” program for 2014.
Volunteer projects on March 29th will include juvenile tarpon research in Lemon Creek, invasive plant removal, native plant seedling collection and planting, and replacement of wetland plants in the artificial floating islands (a water quality project). Students and parents from L.A. Ainger Middle School will be at the preserve to participate in the volunteer projects and members of the community are invited to join us.
Here Comes the 2014 Giving Challenge and The Friends are Taking It On
A note from Mary Brown, Coordinator of the Friends of Sarasota County Parks:
“Get ready for the 2014 Giving Challenge! The Friends of Sarasota County Parks will be one of hundreds of nonprofits participating in the Giving Challenge coming up on May 6 and 7.
This is a great opportunity for the Friends to raise funds to support our parks and to raise awareness about the wonderful work being done by all of our Chapters.
The Friends of Sarasota County Parks makes it possible for talented, passionate individuals in our community to come together in support of a common cause or to fill a need. From adding new playground equipment to a favorite park, building a community garden, recruiting volunteers to clean our beaches, creating new dog parks, or building butterfly gardens, the Friends and its Chapters make Sarasota a better place to live and play. Keep an eye out for more information on how to make this year’s Giving Challenge a huge success by donating to the Friends of Sarasota County Parks during the 24 hour online fundraising campaign on May 6 and 7!”
Mary Brown is the Friends’ community liaison for the Giving Challenge. Here are the nuts and bolts of the Friends’ approach to the Challenge:
It’s a 24 hour-challenge, noon May 6-noon May 7.
100% of the money raised by a Chapter stays with that Chapter.
100% participation of the board is very important
The Board of Directors at the Feb. 27th meeting approved these additional incentives:
$250 will go to the Friends Chapter that gets the most donors, and another $250 to the chapter that raises the highest amount of contributions.
If you give a gift of $300 or more to the Giving Challenge, you can get a Recognition Paver at Siesta Beach.
Also, donations to the Legacy Trail on May 6th 2014 go toward the $75,000 Legacy Trail Extension goal at Gulf Coast Gives.
Kudos to Friends of the Parks Board Members!
Solar-powered well, bins and other supplies go to community gardens thanks to the Friends
Kudos to FOSCP Board Members Russell Johnson, Terry Redman and Marcello Paolini! In Fall 2013, Sarasota County was awarded a grant through the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. This sustainability-based grant provided funding for the installation of a solar-powered well and shed at Englewood Community Garden, located at Buchan Airport Park. Terry and Marcello have been crucial in coordinating distribution of the funding.
