Sta. Lucia, Euro-Med join Mighty Sports, Jumbo in PCBL semis after surviving respective KO matches

Lucia and Euro-Med pulled off contrasting victories against their respective rivals in a pair of knockout matches to advance to the semifinal round of the PCBL Chairman’s Cup. The Realtors outlasted Biyaheng SCTEX, 80-73, behind a balance contribution from their local players. Jhaps Bautista led the way for the Realtors with 15 points followed by Kent Salado’s 13, but the rest of the locals, from the starters to the relievers, made significant contributions. Nico Bangga added 12 while Wowie Escosio, Jett Vidal and Pao Javelona each chipped in eight markers as the Realtors won for the second straight game over SCTEX to advance to the Final Four. “Gusto talagang manalo ng mga bata. Bautista sparked a 10-0 run by the Realtors, who posted their first sizeable lead at 49-41 in the third period. But Sta. Lucia didn’t stop and in the fourth period, Ivan Camasura fed Bangga for a jumper to give their team their biggest lead of the game, 69-58, with 4:01 left and never looked back. Euro-Med caught the last bus to the Final Four after outplaying Foton, 68-52, in the other knockout game. Mike Parala played his best game of the conference, tallying 15 points and six boards, but Euro-Med banked on Jeff Tajonera’s triple that sparked 11 unanswered points, allowing the Laboratory Experts to pull away for good. Sta. Lucia’s Landry Sanjo, Foton’s Levi Hernandez spark teams to PCBL playoff wins

Lucia to a hard-earned 77-67 win over SCTEX in Game 2 of their PCBL Chairman’s Cup best-of-three quarterfinal series at the Marikina Sports Center over the weekend. Back in form after recovering from a hamstring injury, Sanjo quickly provided what is needed by the Realtors. He anchored the team’s interior defense that limited SCTEX big man Raul Soyud, who was held to only 10 points, one of his lowest outputs in the tournament supported by Spalding, Hahn Manila, Ambucore, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant, and LGR. “We were able to stop Soyud because of Sanjo. Masarap talagang maglaro ng may import,” Sta. Lucia head coach Ogie Gumatay said. “We’re hoping to see the same kind of energy from him sa Game 3.” The do-or-die Game is set on Wednesday with Sta. Lucia battling SCTEX at 5 p.m. followed by another knockout encounter between Foton and Euro-Med. Foton was able to force a rubber match after outlasting Euro-Med, 79-76, in Game 2, behind the explosive performance of Levi Hernandez. The 6-foot-2 swingman set a new PCBL record for most points scored in a single game, besting the previous mark which he also held. He tallied 36 points, including the game-tying triple that sent the game to overtime. In the extra period, Hernandez capped his game-long brilliance with a transition basket in the last 10 seconds to ensure the Toplander’s win. With Sanjo providing the inside presence for the Realtors, the team’s top guns were able to shoot with more confidence as Jhaps Bautista, Wowie Escosio, Jett Vidal, Kent Salado and Ivan Camasura contributed in valuable ways. Vidal poured in his nine points in the fourth period, all coming from beyond the arc to spark Sta. Lucia’s breakaway. The Realtors posted their biggest lead of the game, 73-57, and were never seriously threatened from there. Euro-Med, import-less Sta. Lucia back on winning track in PCBL

Lucia got back on winning track after surviving Supremo Lex, 80-76, in a pair of exciting games in the PCBL Chairman’s Cup at the Marikina Sports Center over the weekend. The win by both squads enabled them to improve their standings at 5-5. They are now tied at fourth to fifth places, but only half a game behind SCTEX (5-4) and second-placer Jumbo Plastic (6-4), putting them right in contention for a twice-to-beat berth in the quarterfinal round. Sta. Lucia’s victory also knocked Supremo Lex out of the running for the playoffs in this tournament supported by Hahn Manila, Spalding, Ambucore, Gerry’s Grill, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant and LGR. Playing without import Prince Eze, who got injured in practice, the Realtors banked on their solid frontline to offset the production left by their reinforcement. Jam Jamito had a double-double performance of 19 points and 11 boards while frontliners Wowie Escosio and Nico Bangga added 13 and 12, respectively. But it was Jett Vidal, a deadshot guard, who started things off for the Realtors as he hit six treys in the first half to end up with 21 markers as Sta. Lucia snapped a three-game losing skid. Sta. Lucia also welcomed Bong dela Cruz, former coach of the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, as a member of the coaching staff. Euro-Med got another solid games from Ola Adeogun and Jopher Custodio, who both had a double-double performance to help their team in bouncing back following a tough loss at the hands of Jumbo Plastic. Adeogun powered his way for 21 points and 13 rebounds while Custodio, a former player of GlobalPort in the PBA, had 14 points and 10 boards. Custodio was instrumental in the team’s win. He had a triple in the last 10 seconds of regulation to shove his team to within two, 70-68, then Euro-Med gambled on fouling Jeric Nacpil, who missed two free throws that could have sealed the win for the Toplander. That allowed Alex Almario to race down court and on his way to take a three-pointer, he picked up a foul from Levi Hernandez. Almario could only make two of three shots as the match went to ocvertime. Another ex-pro, Eloy Poligrates, contributed 20 markers while Pari Llagas chipped in 12 for Euro-Med. Euro-Med and Foton engaged in a game of spurts. The Laboratory Experts quickly raced to a 10-0 lead, but the Toplander unloaded a furious 28-6 counter attack before both teams set up an exciting finish that had to be decided in the extra five-minute stretch. In overtime, crucial free throws form Llagas, Poligrates and Adeogun sealed the win for Euro-Med. Sta. Lucia shackles Supremo Lex for 3rd PCBL win; Mighty Sports continues to roll

Lucia provided the team stability on both ends of the court as the Realtors discovered a new facet of their game in their 80-67 win over the Supremo Lex Builders over the weekend at the Marikina Sports Center. The entry of Jamito, former National University guard Paolo Javelona and returning Ivan Camasura transformed the Realtors into a solid defensive unit and they’ve proven that against the Builders, who were limited to just four points in the third period. With their defense tightening up, the Realtors were able to turn a 45-38 deficit around and scored 15 unanswered points to finally gain momentum. Supremo Lex’s first two points in the third were free throws from Mark Montuano. It was also Montano who ended the Builders’ eight-minute field goal drought with a bucket in the 2:16 mark. But there was no stopping Sta. Lucia (3-2) from there as it raced to a 17-point lead off a James Castanarez basket with 3:56 left in regulation to take the fight out of Supremo Lex, which lost for the fourth straight game. After winning their debut game in the Chairman’s Cup, the Builders now carry 1-4 win-loss record, just half a game behind winless Euro-Med in this tournament supported by LGR, Spalding, Hahn Manila, Ambucore, During Barbeque and Restaurant and Gerry’s Grill. Jamito, a two-way 6-foot-5 frontliner, finished with 15 points to make an immediate impact in his first game with the Realtors. “We’ve talked about one thing coming off the half and that’s to play tough defense. Mighty Sports makes it back-to-back wins, Foton stuns SLR in PCBL action

Joining forces with Kiefer Ravena in the backcourt, the Mighty Sports guard tandem helped make their teammates look good as John Lopez and import Bright Akhuetie got good looks, leading their team to a 75-68 triumph over Supremo Lex in the PCBL Chairman’s Cup Friday at the Marikina Sports Center. It was the second win in as many games for Mighty Sports, which grabbed the solo lead in this seven-tean cast being supported by Hahn Manila, Spalding, Ambucore, Gerry’s Grill and LGR. Lopez, picked up by Mighty Sports from inaugural staging champion Jumbo Plastic, led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds while Bright Akhuetie came away with a double-double performance of 15 points and 16 boards. “Having TY Tang is like having a coach inside the court. Petron thumps Philips Gold, Foton rips Cignal to open new season of Philippine SuperLiga

Star-studded Petron blanked Philips Gold in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23, to begin its campaign on a high note as the new season of PLDT Home Ultera Philippine SuperLiga opened Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena. Dindin Santiago-Manabat led the Blaze Spikers, also the defending Grand Prix champion, as she finished with 10 kills for a total of 13 points. Aby Marano added seven points for Petron which bucked the absence of volleyball superstar Rachel Anne Daquis. Myla Pablo led the way for the Lady Slammers with 13 points while this year’s top pick Iris Tonelada, despite going without a point, still impressed fans with her prowess as she connected 14 of her team’s 20 total sets in her debut. In the other match, Foton also dominated Cignal, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23. Patty Orendain came away with 16 kills for 18 points while Nicole Tiamzon helped her with 14 markers.
