Alberta Premier Danielle Smith slammed the Edmonton Public School Board Friday morning for its banned book list, which features more than 20
The UCP (the party in power in my province) is demanding that books with sexual content be removed from school libraries.
They gave schools a timeline of one month to remove said books but gave no list of which books to take out, only a guideline of what type of book they want removed, meaning that librarians have to individually go over every book in their libraries (in my province, school libraries typically only have 1 staff member, if any).
The government also didn't give any extra funding or resources for schools to use in complying with the order.
So schools started compiling lists of books to pull so each librarian doesn't have to go over each book in their library individually and reinvent the wheel over and over.
And the government is mad that districts are making lists of books to pull as per the government's orders.
How else do they want librarians to get this done, let alone in 1 month?
As it is, my school library will be closed for the first month of school so I can go over the books, and I'm just an elementary school librarian. I can't imagine the stress the high school librarians must be under.
