»@lua_ribeira (Lua Hlowa) turned her lens to England’s eastern county of Essex for a collaborative project with writer and curator @jesfernie that seeks to make space for new narratives.
Fernie delved into the Magnum Archive earlier this year to explore representations of Essex and responded to her findings with the essay, The Peculiar People. Ribeira then spent five days photographing the locals and the landscape of Canvey Island in response to Fernie’s words.
"A place that conjures such vivid, often negative, responses and stereotypes is, it turns out, a place worth exploring. I discovered a magical place that is rarely discussed in any serious way," writes Fernie.
This project is made possible with the support of the Essex County Council Arts and Cultural Fund (@culturessex, @essex_cc).
