My brain keeps returning to last night's Steven Universe. I can see why it's constructed the way it is. I'm about as old as the creator and when we were in school, teachers would pressure you into being around people who were doing bad things to you in the hopes you'd work it out. Most of the time, this just led to more intense bullying, but the option to say no just wasn't an option.
So, when Steven and Peridot try to pressure Lapiz into accepting Peridot before Lapiz is ready to do so, it's just playing out what we were taught in school except this time the abuser wanted to make amends. In real life, that was never the case when I was forced to coexist with people who did bad things to me.
It just makes me sad that a cartoon that's showing so many good things to kids about so many topics can fail so badly. Lapiz needs time to heal and she doesn't have to accept Peridot in the end. Forcing the issue and rushing the issue makes it one of the weakest things I've seen on the show and one of the more distressing things.
Not sure if I'm looking forward to next week or not.
