Something about skin color
There has been a lot of discussion about the color of makeup foundations and how darker foundations are often harder to find, and in fewer numbers. I find all of this to be true. The one thing that bothers me about this conversation is every now and then I see someone pop in and say “I hate looking for foundations. Matching my skin color is so hard! They really need to make more lighter foundations” and try to steer the conversation towards more shades and away from the color bias. This is the equivalent to saying “I’m uncomfortable when things are not about me.” While you may struggle to find your exact color match if you have lighter skin, and this is a legitimate problem, it does not mean that there aren’t more options for you to choose from, increasing the likely hood of finding a color that may blend well with your skin color, even if it is not perfect. When you reach the darker end of the spectrum there is often only one or two options, leaving you looking very dark or very pale. Color choices often looks something like this:

This discussion is about making the spectrum look like this:
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
In an ideal world it would look like this (or even more options, maybe they’ll finally make skin tone matching work):
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
However, this is not the discussion we are currently having. Until we can achieve an equal spectrum of skin colors, we are playing favorites with race in the makeup world. This is not okay. I am very lucky and do not have huge amounts of trouble finding a foundation color match, but the fact that I, a light asian, has to often pick the 2nd darkest foundation color is insane. While it is justified to complain about matching skin to be hard, please respect the time and place to do so. If you wish to make a unique post about the subject, do it, but please do not attach such comments to already existing blog posts or other media about skin color discrepancy. It is not helpful to either conversation.
Moral of the story, please be respectful to all makeup enthusiasts and make sure that you are not steering the story away from a discussion that needs to be had.
