I finished Shorefall (book 2 of the Founder's trilogy) yesterday and I really enjoyed it, much more than the first book. It helps that I completed this one in half the time it took me to complete Foundryside.

My brother-in-law gave me Foundryside for Christmas 2023 when I asked for a book recommendation. He knows I like a good magic system and I work in tech, so this was a natural fit. Spoilers below about the ending of Shorefall and also Mass Effect 3

I was amused at how the ending of Shorefall mirrors that of ME3. When Valeria's true intentions were revealed, I texted my BIL, joking about how they're the same. But then I looked up the ending options for ME3 and OMG they actually are the exact same.

Crasedes wants to CONTROL humanity to prevent them from using innovation for evil

Valeria wants to DESTROY humanity and set it back to pre-scriving technology

The Foundrysiders want to SYNTHESIZE with everyone so that we all live in peace happily ever after.

In the end, Gregor takes what seems to be a different sort of Control ending, though it is actually more in line with the Mass Effect Control ending—Shepherd reincarnates into the Reaper AI, becoming the most powerful being in the Galaxy, much like how Gregor merges with ALL of the lexicons in Tevanne.

A Brief Book Review of: Shorefall by Robert Jackson Bennett

i recently read Shorefall, the second book in the Founders Trilogy of fantasy novels by Robert Jackson Bennett.

i received the first book in this series, Foundryside, as a gift from a friend last year and greatly enjoyed it, so when Christmas came around i got myself this book. i often have difficulty sleeping, so one night recently i decided that i would avoid being on my phone or the computer - having heard of course that these can affect one's ability to fall asleep - and would instead read a few chapters of Shorefall before bed.

then it was suddenly noon the next day and i had finished the book.

it has been a long time since a book has gripped me in the way that this one did. the characters are engaging. the worldbuilding is interesting, unique, and well thought out. the escalation of stakes from the previous book is handled well. at no point was i not desperate to know what happened next.

overall, i highly recommend this book (after first reading Foundryside, of course)
