Vintage Accessories at Paddle8
Vintage hunter Alan Bedwell -- owner of Foundwell and former vintage buyer and accessories designer for Ralph Lauren -- has a selection of hard-to-find accessories up for auction at Paddle8 this week. Included is everything from antique trunks to sterling silver barware. Prices range from the reasonable to outrageous, but it’s all fun to browse. Some of my favorites:
An old whiskey decanter from Asprey, estimated to be from 1908.
A black crocodile Hermes briefcase, as gorgeous as you can imagine, but with a price tag that you wouldn’t believe. I once saw a man in an olive linen suit carrying a brown version of this bag. He looked fantastic.
A charming, miniature two-piece suit, designed to be a gift certificate at Hart Schaffner Marx.
Dollar sign money clip from the 1930s (current price is nicely affordable).
Handsome pair of stirrup cufflinks from the 1950s. There tons of vintage cufflinks here, actually. All of them would be a nice way to add something special to an outfit.
Jenny Lind-style trunk with original hardware, but new leather fittings and a relined interior. Estimated to be from the Civil War era.
A silver peanut dish ... shaped like a peanut.
Paddle8 also has a section for celebrity-related items, where you’ll find John Lennon’s psychedelic scarf and Steve McQueen’s sunglasses. Current auction prices are crazy, but you can get Ella Fitzgerald’s credit card for $200 (it expired in 1963).
