Thank you mo ghrian, but I honestly wouldnt even be able to answer #36 if I tried, it would take a forensic accountant to figure that out.

9. A book that was better than you expected it to be

The first one that comes to mind is The Collected Dorothy Parker, but not because I wasn't expecting it to be good, just because I went in blind and was immediately in love with her short stories. The other is probably Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen? I only picked it up because I am obsessed with his music, but I've never been a fan of celebrity autobiographies, so finding out his prose was beautiful and occasionally devastating was a good surprise.

10. A book that didn't live up to your expectations

Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison. On the surface it had everything I love - conflicted female protagonist? Werewolf? Violence? But it read like a hallmark movie made for the vampire diaries fans, and I was so bored.

17. Top five books of the year

God this is hard. In no particular order:

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - gave me brainrot, obsessed. Lesbian necromancers in space, nothing makes any sense, I would die for Camilla Hect.

The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd - stunning, made me cry and immediately dig out my copy of Thunder Perfect Mind

Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins - honestly super left field for me to read a book like this, but in the spring I was going Through It and listening to this audiobook on repeat while I taught myself to run 5k helped get me through.

Wolfish by Erica Berry - I have never highlighted so many passages in one book in my goddamn life

Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers - an incredibly beautiful and poetic and wrenching book, with one of the best first lines I've read in ages. I picked it up randomly while staying at a residential library and I was in love with it immediately.

King of Cups by Phoebe Woods - kind of a detective romance but it's based on a Boston ice hockey team so, obviously this was my exact jam.

18. Least favourite books of the year

Obviously just my personal tastes, but. (also in no particular order)

Bunny by Mona Awad - mix ever after high, drugs, internalised misogyny, yawn

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh - almost interesting, almost, mostly surface level American navel gazing

Boy Parts by Eliza Clark - reads like a first draft, American Psycho but girlbossified, boring, baggy pacing.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros - bland YA with inconsistent characterisation and plot holes.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - wants so desperately to be The Secret History but just manages to be a book that makes Shakespeare dull.
