Mine Countenance is Labyrinth
I sat on the cliff edge, precarious, lost. Desert sand blew at my back as I looked down upon the crumbling rocks and the faraway, endless sea.
But tonight it was not about the sea.
I stood carefully. I turned towards the sand, and began to walk.
The sand, the sand, the sand swirled around me. It whispered its incomprehensible secrets to me as I walked. It caressed my skin, scraping and furious, strange as angels.
Then, silence. Sand fell to place, still. I kept walking, ignoring the preternatural change. It was not my place to wonder.
A figure appeared then before me, brighter than the sun, yet still I could see him clearly. He hovered, he spoke.
beheld, dethly creature. i am that which ye seke.
I did not believe this was true. It was a place, or lack thereof, that I was searching for, not anything living. Nothing remotely like living. I opened my mouth to request him step aside, but then a strange fear gripped me, and I just couldn’t ask.
i am, yet no nameth hast i. mine countenance is labyrinth, aspect reward. blac is my hat, blac is my hood. do i not daze? do ye not knew me intimate?
This spirit! Be he angel or demon, he was in my way and, over my unease, I grew angry. What right did he have to intrude upon my solitude? Why would he–
He touched a finger to my forehead.
ye shall fly.
I fell to the sand. I profusely wept. He faded from my vision, and sleep then took me quick.
For night upon night upon night thereafter, I forgot time, I forgot myself. I wandered meaningless past the desert. Passing through ancient forests, cities of mobs and metal, ghostly ruins or snow, there was no difference at all.
It might have been eons that I drifted, forlorn somnambulistic maniacal in the dark. It might have only been minutes.
When I awoke, I found myself at that same seaside cliff, the moon above me, waves crash, crash, crashing below.
And now, here I still sit, precariously.
Perhaps it is, after all, about the sea.
I stand carefully. I look out to the faraway and endless sea.
I raise my arms in flight.
the lyrics:
“forlorn somnambulistic maniacal in the dark” (dead can dance, american dreaming)
“blac is my hat, blac is my hood” (QNTAL, blac)
“but then a strange fear gripped me and i just couldn’t ask” (the smiths, there is a light that never goes out)
“strange as angels” (the cure, just like heaven)
i just started working on the @proseriot prompt (incorporate four favorite lyrics in a prose piece). ...because i, apparently, have to work on five or six prose projects at once. and. and! this one is going to be a bit challenging, looking at the lyrics i've chosen. (especially considering the fact that one isn't quite english...)
