Is Ancient Magus Bride Problematic?

Some of the guys behind DBZAbridged started a seasonal review series, including AMB. They were quite concerned that the show might be, let’s say politically incorrect. I figured I’d be writing a defense of the show sooner or later, but now seems like a good time to put it out there.

Chise and Elias’ relationship is complex. It is romantic. It is abusive. It is, tragically, a huge step up for Chise. And it’s marked by a cycle of broken trust and reconciliation. (It’s not sexual, even implicitly.)

But the important part is that their relationship is not romanticized. The high points are permitted to feel sweet, but the story rarely tries to suggest that it’s good or healthy.

At this point I expect the show to end at chapter 23 of the manga. It’s the first time Chise really manages to assert herself. Not against Elias, just asserting herself in general. And their relationship is positive at that point.

But that’s not the end. The manga goes on. If that’s where the show stops, it’s not to say the relationship is now positive on the whole. Just for that moment.

If you want to make AMB out to be something awful, you have your choice of excerpts to support that. But altogether, it’s handled with care. There are problematic stories, and then there are stories about problematic topics. AMB is the latter.
