On Wednesday, Grant died "peacefully in his sleep of natural causes," his publicist and longtime friend, Lani Carmichael, said in a statement to the Associated Press. He died at a private care facility in Hollywood, California.
Carmichael added that Grant was the "hereditary chief and the medicine man of the Sac & Fox tribe," and described him as a man who "traveled the world speaking of his traditions, his experiences, his sobriety and his faith as both a Native American and a Christian."
Grant "came to acting later in life and felt enormous pride in sharing culture through movies and public speaking," his Carmichael said.
His first acting role was in 1988's "War Party" with Kevin Dillon, according to IMBD. Since then, he has made close to 60 appearances in film and television.
Dance to the Berdashe, print by George Catlin from the 1903 edition of his book North American Indians, written 1832-1839
In the 1830’s painter George Catlin depicted a dance honoring a Fox-tribe berdache, or i-coo-coo-a. He described him as “a man dressed in woman’s clothes.” An eyewitness to a similar Fox tribal event in 1902 said dance movements included “pretended love-making” between the berdaches and the tribesmen dancing with them.
