Their eyes met for a moment, Marceline with her warm, polite smile, and Kifaji with a curious, cautious gaze as he guided Leona back to his side. Marceline met Kifaji for the second time in a small bar tucked between the lantern lit night market of Sunset Savanna. She slipped off her jacket as she sat, loosening up after the day, and that’s when Kifaji noticed it the tattoo running along her right arm, dark and deliberate, clearly meant to hide older scars beneath.He thought it was beautiful, not despite what it covered, but because of it.

His gaze lingered just a moment too long. Marceline caught it and raised a brow, amused rather than offended. That small exchange broke the ice.

They shared a drink, then another, conversation flowing easier with each glass. They talked about travel, duty, mistakes made too young, and things left unsaid. Laughter came quietly, often followed by thoughtful silences that felt comfortable instead of awkward. By the time the night deepened, neither of them was counting how much they’d had to drink anymore.

Later, when the bar had grown quieter and the world smaller, Kifaji leaned in first. The kiss was slow and unhurried, as if asking permission. How they broke up:

Marceline and Kifaji ended their relationship when she was 28 and he was around 40/41. After 2-3 years together, Marceline chose to end things despite loving him deeply. As a half-human, half-fox beastperson, and with Kifaji being a bird beastman, she knew their chances of having children were extremely low around 20% and came with serious risks. She didn’t want to take away more of his years or limit his future. The age difference and biological barriers weighed on her, and she felt guilty that loving her might cost him opportunities he deserved. In the end, Marceline made the painful decision to step back and let Kifaji focus on his duties as a chamberlain, believing it was the most responsible and selfless thing she could do for him.

A few months after breaking up with Kifaji, Marceline found out she was pregnant. She didn’t tell him, thinking it would only burden his duties.

Marceline often went to the downtown markets to ask locals how to raise a bird folk child. During one visit, Kifaji saw her and the boy. The resemblance was obvious, and when he learned the child’s age, he understood the truth.
