five favorite episodes of the x files?
In no particular order:
Bad Blood—this is honestly just one of the best, funniest, most self-contained and entertaining episodes out there. I don’t know if I would show it to an xfiles uninitiate (because I think a lot of the humor works better if you’ve come to love Scully & Mulder’s foibles) but it’s probably up there.
Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose—Gillian Anderson shows her acting chops, and the Darin Morgan demonstrates that the show can be something very small and human and beautiful, in between the ridiculous mythos and the monsters of the week.
X-Cops—I am heartbroken that the revival wasn’t filmed in the docu-drama style of The Office, given that xfiles went there first, and it was delightful.
Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man—I loved the Cigarette Smoking Man as a character, he was probably my reason for tolerating the myth arcs for as long as I did. And honestly, this episode is so very human and fond, I love it to pieces.
Squeeze—the classic Monster of the Week episode, the first time in the first season I remember sitting up and thinking ‘YEAH’ because the Scully-and-Mulder dynamic was settling into something worth watching, episode to episode.
Hollywood A.D.—the episode itself isn’t much to speak about, but I love the self-referential, fond, and very lovely tone of it. Whenever I think back over the X-files and its strange scattershot run, I always think of the final scene of this episode, Scully and Mulder walking away as the dead dance.
