Send a symbol to give my muse…
Lisbeth blinks owlishly, mouth hanging open slightly, at the bundle of multicolored fur in Yukina’s arms. Slowly, her eyes moves from the admittedly adorable kitten to the smiling ice maiden. “You’re…just giving her to me?”
Yukina laughs, all warmth and delight. It’s a pretty sound, as always, one that never fails to put Lis at ease. “I’m not ‘just’ giving her to you, Lis! It’s October 23rd, isn’t it?” The pink-haired girl gasps. She hadn’t even looked at the date before heading to Genkai’s compound this morning. Yukina’s expression softens, smile melting with it, and damn it all if Lis doesn’t feel for the millionth time that this precious girl deserves the world and so much more. “It’s your birthday.”
Lis looks down at the kitten again, eyes so bright and curious and happy, and she can’t help but smile. Reaching out to scratch the little thing under her chin, earning her contently closed eyes and purrs, she laughs at herself. “I didn’t even know it was my birthday today,” she tells her honestly.
Yukina chuckles right along with her. “That explains your surprise!” Adjusting her hold on the kitten, she holds her out to her friend. “You can hold her, if you want.”
Lis nods, and Yukina carefully deposits the Calico in her arms. They just look at each other for a few seconds, Lis and the kitten, before the latter leans up to lick Lis’ cheek. The girl gasps a little at first, but smiles and laughs happily a moment later.
Yukina watches, flushing with pride and joy. “See? I knew she’d like you. I’ve been calling her Saki*, but you’re welcome to rename her, of course. She’s been here for a few weeks now, and Genkai said I could keep her. But after I met you and we became friends, I thought you might need her company more than I do. I already asked Genkai, and she said it was more than all right that you have her.”
Unsettled at the thought of taking her friend’s companion away, Lis looks over at her and frowns. “Are you sure? Yukina, you really don’t have to. I can tell you love her, and she loves you, too. I don’t want—”
But Yukina just nods. “Yes. I’m sure.” She grins. “Don’t worry. As long as I know she’s safe and happy, that’s all that matters. Besides, you know I’m only visiting Genkai’s temple. I don’t really live here. It would be best for Saki to live with someone who’ll be there all the time. I don’t want her to be heartbroken every time I leave this place.”
Lis still feels a little bad, but the explanation does make sense. “I see… Plus, no offense, but Genkai doesn’t really seem to be the animal type.”
Yukina chuckles. “No, you’re right about that.” Looking from one to the other, countenance warming, she says, “Thank you, Lisbeth, for taking care of her for me. I’m glad you like her. She really likes you, too.”
Lis raises an eyebrow. “’Like’ her?” she repeats, a chortling undercurrent there. “I love her!” Leaning forward, she wraps an arm around Yukina and buries her face in her shoulder. Saki meows between them, confused, but warm and happy. “And I love you, too,” the girl intones softly. “Thank you for remembering when I didn’t. You’re the best.”
