In this drawing I applied the fractal method. I outlined the big shapes and designed the characters within yhese shapes. Very much like drawing a random shape and seeing a face in it. In this case I made sure the shapes weren’t random, but balanced design shapes instead. Notice how the shadow areas are clearly recogniseable as shapes still. I like how the design turned out to have a feel to it as if it’s an illustration from another era. - - - - #fractalmethod #pencildrawing #characterdesign #woutertulp #artistsoninstagram #shapedesign #circus #dogs https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv1Aj0_lbBz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=t3hzpzkehr56
People asked me to explain a little more about the fractal method. As I mentioned, it was conceived by @vignalistudio and is originally a painter’s approach to design. I hope this #tulptorial helps you to understand the basic idea of this approach. - - - - #tutorial #fractalmethod #schoolism #schoolismlive #arteducation #design #drawing #artistsoninstagram #woutertulp https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvyw1Jtllfr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ymitjxve9631
Horse sketching... i’ve been thinking a lot about style and specializing, and how the range of works I’ve been posting may seem like I’m over the place. For me it does not feel like it’s all so different, and it might be a good idea to explain a little more of my thought proces when I post these images. In general, to me it comes down to this : I am intersted in understanding the principles of art, so I can apply those principles to whatever is needed for a project. Besides making pencil mileage and maintaining drawing skills, I did these sketches to practise @vignalistudio ‘s fractal method. (He sells books explaining this method, worth checking out) in short the idea is that you perceive a design like a fractal, starting with the biggest possible shape, and step by step dividing your designs into smaller shapes. I will soon do a post where I go into this process a little deeper. You can see straight lines around some of the drawings that still show how I focused on the big shapes first. It is not only a great approach to drawing, since it helps to keep your proportions correct, it also helps to look at your drawing in terms of design, the visual statement, in an early stage, where it’s much easier to make adjustments then when you have put in all the details. Let me know if this explanation helps. - - #horsedrawing #sketching #drawingstudy #designing #fractalmethod #artistsoninstagram #woutertulp https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvtve5YFO0Y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=166h78wnwe1r0
