I just feel the need to share this story
I am disabled at the moment, using crutches or a wheel chair to get around. I have a fractured pelvis, thus going to the bathroom I need a little more support then the normal person. I really just need the side rails.
I was at a restaurant and needed to go to the bathroom, so I hobbled over there on my crutches and when I got to the bathroom all 3 stalls were taken, including the handicapped one. Which, honestly, didn't bother me at all. The two regular stalls came out and left, which means it was me, some lady by the sinks talking to her friend in the handicapped stall.
Now, when you see a person with crutches and they aren't moving to the regular stalls, you would assume that they needed the handicapped stall. But no, the girl at the sink did not inform her friend that there was a girl who was in need of the stall. I also saw the feet of the woman in the handicapped stall, and she was standing in the middle of it. Not by the toilet but in the middle, telling her friend she would be out in a second she just had to redo her hair.
When she FINALLY got out of the stall, she looked right at me, saw my crutches (which I know she did because she made a face at them) and then STOOD IN FRONT OF THE DOOR TO THE HANDICAPPED STALL.
This bathroom is by no means roomy so there was no way for me to get to the handicapped stall without running this woman over.
So I politely asked if she would move out of the way. What I got back was a snarky remark that was along the lines of "Why can't you use one of the OTHER stalls that are free. You're young enough."
This lit a fire under my ass because I do NOT want to be in this situation. So my response was "Well, I can't because I am HANDICAPPED. I have a fractured pelvis and I need the extra room and the hand rail on the side of the wall so I can easily sit down."
She had the nerve to sniff at me and tell me it was my fault that I fractured my pelvis, probably "driving like an idiot teenager".
I told her that in my five years of driving, I have been in only one minor fender bender, this fracture was from a horse back riding accident, and that I am in physical pain standing there arguing with her, with something that she knows nothing about and doesn't need to know anything about and that she "should move your ass out of the way before I call the manager and get you thrown out for being so rude."
She stuck her nose in the air and walked out with her friend looking down in shame.
I'm sharing this story because I know that, many of you wouldn't do something like this and I love you all for that. I'm doing this because it helps me relieve some frustration and to remind everyone that if you see someone with a disability, to not feel sorry for them, but to make sure you are doing what you can to help that person out.
Even if that's asking them if they need a door held for them or something off the top shelf or if you're in the handicapped stall and a friend is outside, that they give you notice that there is someone in need of that stall as soon as possible.
You don't know their back story, you don't know how they got their injury, and you certainly don't know any special needs that that person may or may not need. Don't assume. Ask. (Politely that is)
