I’m still learning more things about myself and my experiences. I’ve mentioned the time I fell down the stairs at the age of 7 and although I knew I was in hospital for four days and that I wasn’t allowed to sleep, what I didn’t know was that it was because I had a fractured skull and the doctors were afraid that if I slept I'd slip into a coma.
I came across the letter about the fall when I was looking through my medical notes, trying to piece together 10 missing years of medical notes. Although a fractured skull isn't something a parent would want to divulge to a child of such a young age, there was nothing stopping them from talking to me about my experiences when I was old enough to understand.
Whatever we go through as children, it’s important we know the facts and can place our experiences. For me it’s joining up the dots on the bigger picture of my experiences. Being able to understand our experiences gives us a clearer perspective on life.
I also believe it not only shapes our world and highlights our strength, but shapes us as individuals too. Even if a parent doesn’t think it's important, it's more important what the child thinks, after it's the child's life.
