The sights were beautiful; this much Miles acknowledged. That and the harsh sounds that the old man next to him made to get his attention at various times. Miles would immediately look up at the throat clearing that Herr von Karma made.
“Daydreams and such nonsense are for fools, Miles Edgeworth,” he said, firmly. A solid accent graced his words, thankfully understandable. Miles didn’t want to know what would happen if he asked Herr von Karma to repeat anything.
“No stuttering either,” the man went on. “Be confident, commanding in your tone. People do not follow uncertainty. They need a leader. They seek it. You must be that leader in the courtroom and in life. Being associated with the von Karma name, I will expect nothing less from you. My family name carries a reputation that demands respect and dignity. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir,” Miles replied. As afraid as he was, he was already teaching himself to hide it. It would be best for everyone.
The remainder of the ride was silent. Miles kept his attention straight ahead and sat upright. Thankfully, it wasn’t that much longer. The estate to which they pulled up the drive was rather large. The boy couldn’t keep the awe from his expression.
“You have a very nice home, sir,” he said.
Herr von Karma nodded. “Of course,” the man countered. “All of it, a grand part of the previously mentioned reputation.”
The driver made haste in opening the door for them, so quickly that Miles didn’t notice the lack of gratitude for his compliment. Herr von Karma was already making his way up the walk as Miles climbed out of the car, softly thanking the driver for his help. The young man grinned, nodding his head.
“MILES EDGEWORTH!” von Karma bellowed. “DO NOT DAWDLE!”
The boy ran as fast as he could to catch up, falling in pace as they made their way inside.
