Well. Now that it’s over, I can post and be grateful for the outcome and the people who helped. We started having trouble in Houston traffic. By Athens, Texas when we pulled off to try to find a mechanic, the pickup died and wouldn’t start again. A sweet guy helped pull us to a safe place. AAA finally got a wrecker to us. We planned to stop in Paris, Texas for the night, and it was 15 miles over the 100 mile limit. The wrecker driver got us to the automotive place in Paris. They just happened to be working late last night so when we called they knew we would come in overnight and told us where to leave the key. A great Uber driver got us to the hotel - which held our reservation. Precision Automotive guys figured out the issue in less than 2.5 hours (the air filter was put in backwards the last time the oil was changed AND the mass air flow sensor was dirty - which explained all of the issues. $305 later + $105 for the extra tow miles + $20 for Uber, we are back on the road.
