Eric Random “Call Me” (1980)
Eric Random is a name seldomly mentioned, despite having toured and poerformed with The Buzzcocks’ Pete Shelley and Francis Cookson as part of The Tiller Boys and The Free Agents, The Velvet Underground’s Nico, and Cabaret Voltaire. On “Call Me”, it’s very hard to imagine the sounds not reminiscient of being attacked by giant poisonous insects and more towards experiemental electronic techniques. No matter the idea, Random set out to do it. 15 hypontizing minutes swirling, mixing, and manipulating everything together into an aching throbbing mess. Screaming trills, humming guitar squeals, minute electronic details, and powdery beats all converge into one massive estranged avant-garde feeling one wouldn’t easily get over. This was a cut performed and recorded live at London’s Lyceum on March 23, 1980 sharing a notabler bill with Echo & The Bunnymen, A Certain Ratio, Psychedelic Furs and others.
