I was so excited for the reveal of Maxwell's wrestling persona in the most recent episode because it's been something I've been expecting since episode 1 from the moment I saw his last name was Gotch. That's because I know Murph is the same type of wrestling nerd I am and the last name Gotch carries a lot of history with it. That's because one of the true pioneers of pro wrestling was this guy.
That right there is a man named Frank Gotch, whose influence on the sport is still felt today. He was at his height of popularity in the early 1900s, back when pro wrestling was mostly a for real sport, often called "Catch" wrestling. He's considered the first ever World Heavyweight Champion in wrestling history and he held the title for a full 5 years from 1908 to 1913 and was one of the most famous athletes in the entire country at the time, which is really saying something in a time before TV. The Gotch name carries as much weight in wrestling as Babe Ruth does for baseball, if that helps put it in perspective.
I also think Murph named him Maxwell after current AEW wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman (aka MJF), but that's more speculation than anything. Anyways, I can't wait to see more from The Max in future episodes.
