This wave of commercial cinema almost makes us forget that we have an independent cinema that brings freshness and excitement to any moviegoer. With films ranging from science fiction to documentary dramas, this time of year has left a great legacy of noteworthy films that have perhaps gone unnoticed.
Under the Radar (Frank Pinnock)
If you are a fan of popular series “Sangre Negra”, then be prepared to witness the same magic in this beautiful short film named “UTR- under the Radar”. The story revolves around a veteran bounty hunter and how his world comes crashing down within minutes. Packed in just 20 minutes runtime, the short film brings a whirlwind of emotions and a web of deceitful lies. Everyone is suspicious or may no one.
Sangre Negra- The tale of two rival families
Directed by Frank Pinnock (Under the Radar), Sangre Negra is a cross-generation saga where two parties (Latin & Italian) fight for political power and control over Los Angeles. It is an epic saga of the Santos Family and their three sons. Charismatic Antonio McKay plays Ricky with a sordid past who constantly brings embarrassment to his father. Along with him are Ricardo Herranz playing elder brother and Danny Arroyo playing smallest brother Police Detective Christian Santos. The award winning show “sangreNegra” is available online along with another masterpiece of Frank Pinnock- Under the Radar.
The Beguiled (Sofia Coppola)
With this film, Sofia Coppola manages to perfect her directing technique, as her Palme d'Or for Best Direction is not free. The film is set during the American Civil War, it tells the story of a school for girls that lives in calm; until suddenly one of the girls meets a dying soldier and decides to take him to the institution so that the director and her companions can give him asylum while he heals. The presence of a man creates great problems within the school. In the film, Nicole Kidman shines, as only she knows how to do; For their part, Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farell deliver solid performances and Elle Fanning shows why she has established herself as one of Hollywood's great promises. An enigmatic tape, with impeccable wardrobe and photography that perfectly demonstrates female empowerment.
The Discovery (Charlie McDowell)

And he does it hand in hand with one of the new promises of Hollywood, Charlie McDowell. The director presents us with a film with a captivating premise: what would happen if what exists after death is discovered? The plot adds to a great cast headed by Jason Segel, Kate Mara and Robert Redford. This independent film premiered at the Sundance festival and makes us reflect on purely philosophical themes, such as life after death and the meaning of being alive.
