I would love to start with the fact that I believe your amazing and I love the comic. I was going back to some old conics of yours and I noticed that the character design for Erik changed completely. The face was boxier before and the hair line was farther back also his eyes have changed from yellow to mismatch David Bowie eyes I was just wondering what brought about this character redesign. ( also I noticed Raoul and Christine didn't change too much )
Ahh thank you so much, Anon!! Oooh design talk, oh yes! LONG POST WARNING!
Ah, YES! Erik has indeed changed! Not completely–but yes–he is different. Raoul has also changed a little–although it is more a case of how I was drawing him vs. design change. He was the HARDEST to design because I had a lot of spoiler factors to keep in mind, and I also wanted him to be kind of younger looking than most Raoul incarnation. Raoul’s design is influenced by Mika (of all things) and a cute dad I saw at the beach once (what a cute dad he was, you guys). Daroga is pretty similar to original concepts–but his face is a lot rounder/heart shaped and his eyes are a more obvious green I think. There are just a lot of Daroga designs that look very similar to the whole Kay/Nadir description and I’m not at all doing any Kay Daroga stuff so yeah! Ch-ch-changes! Christine hasn’t changed much at all. She was the first character from the comic that I actually Designed (I had a bunch of concept/research work of her in my sketchbook). I started designing her way back when I designed ALW Christine! So yeah, she’s the oldest designed child <3
NOW ERIK ON THE OTHER HAND…oh boy, Erik’s face was a lot boxier and that was because I hadn’t quite designed in a traditional/organized sense. I had kind of just doodled a Frankenstein Monster idea for the original Monster-as-Phantom-post but I didn’t have the comic story figured in my head until a little while after. That’s when I decided to go for the coffin-shaped head! I wanted more face shape diversity in the cast–and I thought that look (the one he has now) was closer to my original idea for the creature (back in high school) and more appealing in general. He still did have the mismatched eyes though! I just made a decision with the comic not to draw pupils so that you can see the eye colors better! So once I got rid of the pupils, his eye was more obviously blue and the other one is just a pure black/brown…orb thing. And instead of having just yellow eyes–they are more of a greeny/yellow eye whites, I guess. Also, I hardly ever colored sketches of FrankenErik back in the day, so he really didn’t have a proper color scheme until recently, haha…I confess! A lot of the change was almost subconscious for me–I was drawing him so often for tumblr doodles and such that I found myself going “hm, I think it looks better like this” or “this is quicker/more memorable if I draw his hair like so..” And through that process, he really changed quite a bit! Although, I think he has probably become TOO appealing but oh well, hah. I also just STOLE my own Hades design and gave it to FrankenErik–I was developing a Hades and Persephone story but it didn’t feel like it had as much promise as Fantomestein did so ya know what, I totally recycled some of those design ideas! And that’s ok, I can just redesign Hades/Persephone when I get the chance.
So yes–the current incarnation of FrankenErik is a combo of 2 things: My original design idea from high school + my design ideas for Hades from a comic I almost made!
Now you know my terribly muddled process, haha…ahhhh
