For full reading, follow link in profile. New Deck Interview Spread with the SPILL Tarot This deck is shot through with sardonic humour and subversive glamour. At the same time, it feels like a very serious project that should lend itself to serious use. Its dark side may not lend itself to everyday readings, and while there may be a risk in getting distracted too far into the individual images, they certainly encourage a contemplative approach - one which could well stimulate imaginative and creative responses. 1. Two of Cups 2. Ten of Wands 3. Ace of Pentacles 4. King of Cups 5. XII Dominic Johnson as The Hanged Man 6. XI Kira O'Reilly as Strength The SPILL Tarot was an artist-led experimental project at the heart of SPILL Festival of Performance 2009. In collaboration with photographer @manuelvason, 22 performance artists each restaged one of the Major Arcana, in a variety of studios and locations around London. Those familiar with radical performance art from the last 20 years will already have come across the work of #RonAthey, #FrankoB, #MarisaKarnesky and #VaginalDavis, to name but four of the 22, and they will be prepared for the kind of dramatically transgressive images they present. The minors are composed of objects suggestive if not directly illustrative of the suits. Thus while the Cups are, for example, cups in all their domestic and/or antique variety, the Swords are a variety of pointed and bladed tools, forks, razors, sewing implements - and so on. One of the features that appeals to me is not only finding more about the artists portraying each Arcanum, but recognising some of the London locations where they were photographed. Hence we find Rajni Shah as The Fool gambolling in the Walthamstow Marshes, Robert Pacitti as Death emerging from the low-tide shallows of the Thames somewhere downstream of Woolwich, #DominicJohnson as The Hanged Man suspended over the snow-flecked tarmac of a children's playground next to a housing estate in Greenwich, and #HelenaHunter as the Magician performing a ritual in @treadwellsbooks in Bloomsbury.
