“cats playing billiards.” bronze painted by franz bergman.
A fairly typical Vienna Bronze, in this case by Franz Bergman
Franz Bergman Austrian miniature: cold-painted bronze cat washing another cat, c. 1900. Thanks to Pavel Vadimov for the tip.
Bronze lamp
Franz Bergman (Austria, 1838-1899)
Very impressive cold painted bronze lamp of a tusked elephant with ornate blanket and harness with driver seated on neck with large Howdah with Royal Princess in elaborate feathered headdress reclining under canopy. Mounted on original black marble base.
Cold-painted bronze refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so-called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence 'cold painted'.
