{FraTemp Betrayal}
I wanted to give the betrayal Francis commits against his beloved cousin Gabriel as much emotional and symbolic depth as possible. Francis doesn’t hate Gabriel and neither does Gabriel hate Francis despite the ache in their hearts and the overall betrayal hurting their bond to no return. On the morning of 13th October 1307 Gabriel & his ppl got arrested and Francis didn’t know what to do or say. So, despite knowing that things will go bad Francis kisses Gabriel’s cheek. Maybe as a form of apology for betraying him and what’s to come, maybe as a form of saying a last ’I love you’ (platonically). He hopes, Gabriel will forgive him and that he knows that Francis’ actions don’t come from a place of hatred. They’re both just pawns in the game of their bosses and history itself.
FraTemp and EngTemp dynamics are diametric opposites, but both very interesting and fun and slept on. FraTemp is incredibly messy and complicated and toxic, intense conflicted feelings of love and envy and familial betrayal and I gave you everything I had. meanwhile EngTemp is two idiots invading Scotland together for no good reason.
Apart from TeuTemp being a tragic duo, Francis and Gabriel are equally tragic to watch. They were something like cousins, but grew up almost like brothers. At least they had to be close and it was the one kind of relationship Gabriel could've called a "family". And their close bond broke apart in the last few decades before Gabriel's death.
There was much manipulation going on around Francis (influence of the Capetian court and their narrative of the story around the Templars and the papacy etc) and those two boys were just easily influenced teens. Their relationship couldn't withstand the mess that was going on during their time. And despite Francis' inner conflict and switching back in forth about who to trust and what is true, their bond was already doomed. It broke both of their hearts, changed the image they had of each other forever and even if Gabriel would come back in a Revival AU, everything would stay shattered between them. Even IF Gabriel would maybe forgive him if he knew the full story around Francis.
Because in the end Gabriel would've still died at the hands of the man he called a brother.
