it is irritating at best, to be stared at by a face so similar to his own. it makes his chest tear up with jealousy. how dare this kid taint his own reflection with such mundanity?

he probably doesn’t make much sense to the other, but he spits out bitterly, lights a cigarette, leans against the wall of the alley. games with mortals: probably his favorite pastime. and if it ends with one less of them crawling on the surface of earth --- who cared, really?

           “ ----YOU’RE MIKE RIGHT ?? ” words spill from his lips quickly and he pauses, obviously hesitant as he fiddles his fingers together. he had seen the other boy in class ---- being new and all, eddie didn’t really HAVE any friends, but he could see clear as day that this boy was SAD ----- and decided he wanted to befriend him. “ i missed yesterday ----- ummm, science class? i sit behind you. you wouldn’t happen to have NOTES, would you ?? ” eddie using his hospital visit to interact with said boy? yeah, making friends right off the bat was NOT his strong suit.

i’ve been meaning to write something abt the fact he knew that he was going to die if they closed the gate, but that it HAD to be done. and the shadow monster !! was so close to a full takeover !! and he used what little time he had left to tell them how to defeat it !! even though he knew he wouldn’t make it out !! THEY DON’T TALK ABOUT IT.

( day 1. like his life begins today, like every day before that was a test drive for this one. day 1 W.M., with mike. a new way to count them: before mike, with mike. no thinking of that dreaded ‘after mike’ when he’s with him. who knows the future, anyways? he surely doesn’t, no sir, and for all he knows, ‘with mike’ might never end. day 1, beneath the stars, when shaky lips found their destiny, that dreaded, dreaded destiny that’s going to curse them with a love way deeper than allowed, deeper than accepted, closer than expected. day 1, under the stars that had been blinking so lonely in that cold, vast darkness of the night, day 1, when it feels like seeing color for the first time, like all those stars are suddenly worlds filled with life and possibilities and eternity, always eternity. day 1, that one kiss that changed everything, and sometimes he thinks what would have been had he never kissed mike, but that just seems like an offensive idea, as if it derives that simple gesture of meaning: because it had been everything and more, and you don’t ask ‘what if’ when that one gesture has changed your life. you don’t do that. day 1, and everything’s changed. )

they don’t talk about it in public. they talk about it, sometimes, behind closed doors, under several blankets when the world outside is asleep and that sky full of stars is overcast with clouds. “i really like you. “i really like you, too.”

( day 173. when it’s raining, and their shirts are, well, somewhere, and eddie’s fingers trace pale skin scattered with constellations of freckles: not for anything more than simply being close, skin on skin because it just feels, well, nice and warm and soft and sometimes close just isn’t close enough when there’s shirts involved. they’re 14 and 16 and they don’t know what they’re doing anyways, but it’s nice and they don’t ask the what ifs, never do. it just is, and it’s nice and warm and comfortable and maybe mike is asleep already. breath deep and calm and familiar and nothing in the world can harm them under these blankets when mike’s arm is wrapped around his tiny frame and they fit like secret puzzle pieces to a picture that’s warped, wrong, scary, but it’s their own and they would fight forever to protect it. day 173 when they fall asleep together, day 174 when they wake up, and things are good. things are alright like this, and maybe it will never end. maybe it’ll just stay like this, he thinks, with his hand on mike’s chest and his face buried in his neck, and things will be alright. )

they talk about it. a lot. hushed voices in public, sneaky fingers intertwining when no-one’s looking, stolen kisses in dark corners of the school, and graduation lingers like an unwanted threat. “i really enjoyed our kiss last night.” “shh, mike! someone could hear!” giigles, blushes. teenagers in love, and it makes the world stop for a second, that’s how powerful this feels, and then: “i really enjoyed it, too.”

( day 893. it’s warm, even at night, and mike’s parents are on vacation. cicadas are incredibly loud, stars incredibly close, and he almost feels like he’s 13 again, on that street on that one night when everything changed. he never stops counting the days, like he’s collecting memories, like he’s collecting colors for the dreadful winter that might or might not come. college is a thing, after all, and he is merely 16 and mike is 18 and things might get complicated. so he keeps them, those memories of shared beds and gasped love confessions, and maybe they still don’t know what they’re doing but hell, they’re getting there for sure. hickeys are new, bold moves in a world where questions can be dangerous, but god, he loves mike and sometimes he just needs to make sure that mike knows that, too, even when he’s off to visit some college he might go to in the not so far future, and honestly, he doesn’t even look that ridiculous in turtle necks even though he says so. )

they don’t have to talk about it anymore, now, because they know without words, they feel without explanations.

( day …. he has lost track. old diaries are dusty when they’re found, and knowing smiles grace their lips when they flip through them on their couch. wedding pictures framed in delicate white on the sideboard, and that scary past seems so far away, it’s almost like reading someone elses words. but nothing much has changed, really, if you think about it. it’s still them under the stars, on that fateful night, but now they’re older, but still somehow the same. what we have: this is special. who finds the love of their life at 13? we did. we did, on an abandoned road in a small town that wasn’t any good for anything except for finding each other, and somehow those kids from back then are still here, as if we built our adult frames around that one night. an entire life built on a dream, on a desperate hope for a better world that, one day, would accept that this is who we are, and we’re not changing. and here we are, and there’s still some fights to be fought, but we stood our ground and we never backed away, and in the end, it all paid off. hang in there, kids: let us do the work. you’re safe now. you’re safe to love and save to live and even though we’re not quite there yet, we sure have come a long way. and we’ll keep walking, fearless, hand in hand, and we’ll fight the fight until there is no fight anymore, and then: then we’ll know that the world is finally at peace. for all of us. but especially for two boys, hand in hand, on a lonely road in hawkins, indiana. )
