      Every time she attempted to escape, the worse her condition was when his men had brought her back to his doorstep. He was actually unsettled by the fact that one day, they might bring her back dead. But he made sure there wasn’t a note of sentimentality in his cold warning. She needed to be kept in check. But the concern in his expression and tone in his next words couldn’t be missed.

     “And here I thought you’d be more reasonable at this point. What are you trying to return back to? All your friends have turned against you, as you know. If anything, this place is your refuge.”

    Ben stood from his seat in the waiting room of the medical facility as the nurse approached him. As soon as he heard she was stable enough for him to see, his first impulse was to rush into the patient’s room, heedless of the judgement of others. How long had it been since he last saw her? A few months, perhaps, but to him, it felt like much longer. Passing the threshold, he immediately witnessed her laying on the hospital bed. Memories rushed into his consciousness from her very presence, the good and the bad times. There must have been an adamant reason why his heart nearly palpitated out of his chest when he got the report that she was found, alive.  He had missed her.   That fact was suddenly clear to him.

     “Hi, Kate.” Those words were softly uttered, as if not to disturb her, and the name that left his lips invoked a familiar ache that now troubled him for a different reason. She didn’t look quite like herself. Or how he remembered her. Someone had broken her more so than he could ever break her. There was no hesitation in the way his hand settled on top of hers, fingers tightening around bruised skin as if to make sure she was really here.

It was genuine shock that coursed through him. No one (dared) to touch him like that, and it took him a considerable minute for him to recover, before he slowly turned her direction.

3. Cuddle hug

It wasn’t customary to have such impulses, nor was it a natural inclination for him, but seeing the now all too familiar sight of her silhouette as she washed the dishes in the morning light caused him to approach her, as silent as a cat. Before even he could fully assess what he was doing, his arms circled the small of her back as he leaned against her, and his chin touched her head. Whether Kate thought he was just mentally toying with her or not, he didn’t particularly care in that moment. He lingered in that position, basking in the warmth provided by their proximity. 

“What do you have in mind for breakfast?” he murmured.

I would first like to discuss your breathtaking beauty. Your face is a bewitching masterpiece and your hair is heavenly, especially when it shines red in the light. Looking at you, I feel as radiant as you are. 

I could spend the rest of my life and more naming off all of the brilliant inner qualities you possess. The beauty within you is as great as your outer beauty and both make me fall deeper in love with you every day. I admire your intelligence, your ability to tolerate the fiends who live around you and the strength with which you carry yourself as you struggle through life.
