In most families someone like Fred would be considered “the good kid,” but he’s the one his parents worry about; he’s the rebel, the problem-child. All he was trying to do was distance himself from the ghost of a dead man. His mum and dad claim they only named him Fred to honor the man they lost, not to try and recapture the past -- but Fred isn’t sure they aren’t lying to themselves. At first he tried to be the person he thought they wanted but he never felt funny enough, never felt clever enough, never felt like himself enough. He tried it the other way -- following the rules, studying for tests, minding his manners -- and discovered that he liked that, liked living in a world that was structured and predictable. It’s rewarding to succeed at something because it’s logical, not because of someone else’s subjective idea of what makes a good joke. He doesn’t understand his family -- and they don’t understand him, either. He’s got his mum’s dedication but none of her humor, and the only thing of his dad he sees in himself is the rebellious streak that led him to love law and order. As for his sister and cousins, they’re so hungry for excitement that they’ll make-up impossible magics and fictional dangers as an excuse for acting-out distorted echoes of the past and that’s something Fred wants nothing to do with.
