The Shockmaster Makes His Debut
During “A Flair for the Gold,” Ric Flair’s talk show segment, at Clash of the Champions XXIV, Harlem Heat and Sid Vicious confronted Sting and Davey Boy Smith, demanding to know who their mystery partner would be in their upcoming eight-man War Games match, which also featured Dusty Rhodes on Sting and Smith’s team and Big Van Vader on Sid and Harlem Heat’s team. Sting would soon introduce their partner, The Shockmaster.
Suddenly, a rotund wrestler wearing a long, puffy vest and a purple glittery Stormtrooper helmet burst through the wall, falling right on his face. The impact was so great that the helmet in question fell off, with The Shockmaster scrambling to put it back on. What followed was a promo by The Shockmaster, which was actually a voiceover by Ole Anderson. Viewers could wear wrestlers mumble to one another during this segment, Smith famously uttering, “he fell flat on his fucking arse!”
The man behind The Shockmaster character was Fred Ottman, who saw fame in the World Wrestling Federation as Tugboat and Typhoon. When he left in 1993, he arrived in WCW under The Shockmaster gimmick. Despite WCW’s attempts to make the most of the character, even reinventing it as more of a klutzy, comedic persona, it was soon abandoned. The Shockmaster’s debut is now regarded as arguably the most well-known botch in professional wrestling.
