Masterchef round 001 || Thomas’ Pancake cake!
Thomas swallows, the camera pointed at his face making him a little shy, he wrinkled his nose before clearing his throat and started to speak. “I’m Thomas and I come from England. My mom often made me work in the kitchen because I wasn’t very useful helping my dad. She taught me a lot about baking... because she didn’t really trust me with the fire... Today I am using a pan however!” He shrugged “I never set the house on fire however and what I am going to make today is my little sister’s favorite.” His face lit up as he continued “Whenever she got sad, I would make her a pancake cake. It would make her smile again!”
Thomas made a small sound as he could start. Rushing over to the sink to wash his hands, one, two, three, four, five. He added some extra soap and rinsed once more before drying his hands and getting started. “Okay, I need flour, milk... eggs..” He started grabbing the ingredients from the kitchen, collecting it as he ran around. Tripping as he grabbed the Sea salt but not spilling anything, just an extra bruise on his knee. What else was new, really. “Olive oil... chocolate... butter... WHERE IS THE BUTT- oh there it is. excuse me, yes thank you.” He maneuvered around someone else apologizing all the way as he now gathered hazelnuts, double cream, vanilla extract, caster sugar, strawberries and some raspberries. when the young witch finally got everything together he grinned. Fifteen minutes had passed, just 75 left.
Grabbing a large bowl Thomas started mixing the flour, milk, three eggs and a tiny pinch of sea salt, as he put the flour in a large cloud of white appeared. Covering the witch in flour. Spluttering he wiped part of his face and then running away from his counter and sneezing in a corner. Cursing he ran towards the water again and washed his hands again. “Okay, Thom, get it together. You made this a hundred times.” he mumbled as he continued mixing the batter into a smooth batter. 68 minutes left.
Now the fun started, Thomas eyed the other people around him as he poured oil into the pan and started baking pancakes. Finally getting a little confidence as he smelled the familiar scent of sweet pancakes. exhaling the witch threw the pancake up into the air, catching it again and a laugh escaped as he put the pancake on the plate next to him. Baking the pancakes went okay, apart from one pancake that ended up on his head, causing the witch to yelp and fall down onto the ground. The pancake ended in the garbage bin and Thomas’ butt would hurt for a day or two. The witch was pretty satisfied. 55 minutes left.
“Okay, now the chocolate...” he mumbled and put a pan with hot water on the fire, waiting for it to boil and then balancing a fireproof bowl on top of it. “Okay.. I have to add the chocolate.. some butter and a little bit of salt...” he bit his lower lip as he started to melt the chocolate. As that was warming up Thomas started to grind the nuts in a pestle and mortar. Adding some of those smashed nuts to the melted chocolate. Then he added some of the cream to the chocolate and mixed it together. The remaining cream and the vanilla were mixed together in a separate bowl.
Now Thomas was going to build the cake, his hands were shaking a little, only 35 minutes left. The eyes of the young student reflected the light almost in a golden tone as he started to work on the cake. He grabbed a large, white, round plate and added some cream on the plate. And then placed the first pancake. He smeared some chocolate mixture on the pancake and then added a second pancake, added some chocolate mixture and added the next pancake. Then a layer of cream in between before going back to chocolate.
After ten minutes he had stacked the pancakes perfectly. It looked delicious in his eyes and he licked his lips. He started to smooth the sides with a spatula before pouring the cream onto the pancake cake, letting it drip over the sides and then putting the remaining smashed nuts on the sides of the cake. Then he shaved some dark chocolate ontop of the pancake cake. As a last decoration he put the raspberries on the plate and a few of them on top then some strawberries and a few drops of chocolate onto the red fruits. He smiled, with still 5 minutes to go he finished the pancake cake.
Thomas managed to get the plate with the pancake cake in one piece to the judge. “Mister Freddy, I made for you a pancake cake. It is filled with chocolate and cream, build with pancakes and I added chocolate, hazelnuts, strawberries and raspberries.” he smiled as he cut a piece off from the layered cake and served it on a smaller plate for Freddy, two strawberries and a raspberry balanced on top. “Enjoy sir!” He smiled brightly, even with the flour in his hair, smears of cream on his cheek and additional bruises. He thought that whatever would happen, he did well.
