In The Green Light District toont De Wilde de eerste stappen van een nieuw cross-over project: Urpflanze 1.0. De kunstenaar liet zich inspireren door Goethe en diens concept van de 'Oerplant', een superplant die het genetische materiaal van alle andere planten bevat. Urpflanze 1.0 reflecteert over de zoektocht naar archetypen in de wetenschap en over de gevolgen van de technologische vooruitgang. Welke positie nemen we bijvoorbeeld in indien we weten dat grote bio-engineering bedrijven zoals Monsanto uit puur winstbejag superzaden over de wereld verspreiden?

Frederik De Wilde works on the borderline between art, science and technology. His art is chiefly based on the interaction between complex biological and technological systems.
Together with Rice University (Houston) and NASA, he developed the blackest black, a nano manufactured material with carbon tubes, so dark that it captures all light.
In the Green Light District, he shows us the first steps of a brand-new cross-over product for the first time. He found his conceptual basis and inspiration with Goethe and the concept of the 'primal plant' or 'Urpflanze'. The central starting point is the research into archetypes in contemporary scientific developments. This has led the artist to a follow-up study connected with contemporary scientific research areas such as synthetic biology, genetics and astrobiology. For the artist, the Urpflanze 1.0 project is a reflection on our society and technological progress. What is our position when giants in the bioengineering industry like Monsanto produce superseed and spread it all over the world purely for profit?

L’artiste Frederik De Wilde travaille à la croisée de l’art, de la science et de la technologie. Son art s’inspire surtout de l’interaction entre les systèmes biologiques et technologiques complexes. En partenariat avec la Rice University (Houston) et la NASA, il a développé le noir le plus noir : un nanomatériau, fabriqué à partir de tubes de carbone, si foncé qu’il absorbe toute la lumière.
Dans le cadre de The Green Light District, il présente en exclusivité les premières étapes de son nouveau projet pluridisciplinaire. Il prend pour fondement conceptuel et source d’inspiration le concept de la « plante originelle » ou Urpflanze chez Goethe (La métamorphose des plantes et autres écrits botaniques). Son point de départ central est la recherche sur les archétypes dans les développements scientifiques contemporains. Cela mène l’artiste à poursuivre son trajet de création de liens entre les champs contemporains de recherche scientifique, comme la biologie synthétique, la génétique et l’astrobiologie. Pour l’artiste, le projet Urpflanze 1.0 constitue une réflexion sur notre société et le progrès technologique. Quelle est notre attitude lorsque des géants de la biotechnologie comme Mosanto mettent au point, par pure cupidité, des super-semences transgéniques qu’ils propagent dans le monde entier ? La « plante originelle » de Goethe est également une « super-plante », car elle contient tout le matériel génétique de toutes les autres plantes. Pour Frederik De Wilde, notre monde est d’ores et déjà « transnaturel », car l’homme a tout « transgressé » et il n’y a donc plus de « paradis » sur la Terre.
