Filmmaker Laura McGann’s documentary The Deepest Breath — a collaboration with A24, Motive Films, Ventureland, and RAW — tells the story of two free divers and their fated journey to cross paths: a champion trying to break world records and a beloved safety diver who helps her train. The film also gives the audience a stunning view inside the world of free diving itself, with extended scenes shot below the surface that are somehow both teeth-grittingly tense and beautifully serene.

“There was almost something otherworldly about it, almost spiritual,” McGann told Tudum in January. “I could feel that there was just an at-oneness that these people had, that they were so relaxed and they were just meant to be there. It was really gentle — but also powerful and hard to believe.”

Haenyeo (해녀; sea women) refers to the all female divers in Jeju, South Korea. They represent the semi-matriarchal family structure of Jeju, and are known for their iron will and determination. The haenyeo tradition dates back to 434 A.D. Originally, it was exclusively a male profession, but sometime during the 18th century, female divers greatly outnumbered male divers.

What makes these women so remarkable is that they all free dive, and many are older women. In 2014, over 98% of haenyeo were women over 50. With no oxygen tank, these women learn, after years of practice, to dive to depths of over 30 feet. At the sea floor, they collect sea cucumbers, urchin, and abalone, which they sell for a small profit. Over the years the haenyeo have gained respect and is no longer seen as just a profession, but a way of life. [x]

Models Dive 25 Meters To An Underwater Shipwreck In Bali For A Literally Breathtaking Photoshoot (10 Photos)

No Photoshop was used to create these photos (except for post production)

The models in these photos had to actually hold their breath

They are true mermaids – as experienced freedivers,  they can hold their breath for 3-4 minutes at a time

That's probably why they were comfortable being TIED to this underwater shipwreck, receiving air periodically from expert safety divers

Benjamin Von Wong, a Montreal-based photographer known for his complicated productions and fantastic images bristling with power, has completed an extraordinarily difficult underwater photoshoot with absolutely stunning results. He and a hand-picked crew of experienced divers, underwater photographers and freedivers set up an entire photoshoot under the sea in a sunken shipwreck off the coast of Bali.
