Hi aunties, I wanted to share my tax strategy! Turbotax is evil. Very evil. But here’s the thing. It offers credits and deductions you didn’t even think to ask about, and it does that better than other similar-but-free sites I’ve tried. Even with your very helpful advice and the IRS instructions it’s hard for a layperson to know everything you’re even qualified for!

So here’s what I do: I go through the Turbotax process and kind of follow along on the IRS forms. Every time I click something that adds to my refund amount I make sure to figure out what that was and put it in my forms. Then I X out of Turbotax and file on the IRS site for free! 😁 It’s a little extra work but I actually get a couple hundred more usually, because I just get overwhelmed if I try to do it myself and I miss things. (my state has this credit that I ALWAYS forget about because the name of it makes me think it doesn’t apply to me.) Thanks Turbotax 👍😉

Oh, you can file state taxes for free in Colorado too on their gov website! (H&R tried to charge me $35 to get a $15 return 😑) The IRS free file site is throwing up an error for me at least about W-2 submission, but it also looks like they plan to fix it by Friday, fingers crossed.

The PA website gives some options for free filing. OLT.com is free to anyone whose gross income tax is between ~16k & ~73k I think. It's more work than turbo tax bc you have to fill in everything yourself but it's free.

Tax Tip 2026-19 March 10, 2026 — There’s roughly one month remaining before the 2026 filing season concludes on April 15.

The IRS Free File program now provides extended filing options beyond the basic 1040 and 1040EZ. Eligible taxpayers using IRS Free File can still claim common and valuable tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and other refundable credits. Refundable tax credits can reduce the amount of tax owed or result in a refund, even if no tax is due.

Taxpayers choosing to use an IRS Free File option may also be able to deduct their business expenses, depending on tax limits and rules, even if they didn't receive a Form 1099-MISC, Form 1099-K, W-2 or other income statement.

Free File is available to taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less in 2025. The guided software will help them prepare and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost. Some partners may also offer free state tax return preparation and filing. Taxpayers can choose from 8 trusted partners and decide which is best for them.
