In December the population of Southern Norway will spend a week or two out in the open sea, in their tiny viking rowboat replicas, crossing over to Denmark to purchase red sausages, cheap beer, and tons of fermented food for the upcoming Christmas festivities.
A cherished, noble tradition for hundreds of generations, but dangerous nevertheless. Not everyone will return home safely.
The most unfortunate of these brave, but miserable people might end up as Sunday brunch snack packs for the eccentric, and rarely observed, underwater polar bear who resides in the unfriendly, unexplored deep waters between Norway and Denmark.
Others might drift astray; utterly, completely disorientated; and find themselves going ashore in New Brunswick or Maine, typically on Christmas Eve in the following year. Luckily their fermented food will still be fermented upon arrival.
But they will face another and far more serious threat, when setting foot on land in these hardy and harsh coastal areas: Their bountiful provisions of festivity food will likely end up in the greedy jaws of the rare, but vital and ferocious species of the North American purple monkey, well known for its highly selective taste in overly fermented food made in Denmark.
And for those who make it back to Norway in time for Christmas, this treacherous, but adventurous journey has only been one more chapter in the continued story of the demands, sacrifices, fears, and hopes which adhere to the arduous everyday life of the stalwart residents of Southern Norway.

i am so tired of the "put on a face mask and drink a glass of wine" or something to the extend kind of "selfcare" posts. sure that's selfcare for about an evening, but being an adult true selfcare is doing things that will be good for you in the long run, even if it sucks right now. the other thing is self indulgence - there's nothing wrong with that, everyone deserves to indulge themselves once in a while, but taking care of yourself isn't about having a nice bath one evening, or buying a sweater you really want.
selfcare is doing the dishes so they won't pile up and stress you out every time you so much as think of going to the kitchen. selfcare is taking a shower instead of a bath because your last water bill was insane, and you can't afford that. selfcare is doing your laundry tonight so you won't have to sniff through every t-shirt in the hamper to find the one that smells the cleanest. selfcare is having rice and salad with your chicken instead of fries because you know your body reacts badly to fried food. selfcare is going to bed early because you have a test the next day, or because you have work and over-caffeinating regularly can cause ulcers. selfcare is not buying that sweater because you have to save up for your annual dental check.
selfcare isn't about a brief moment of fun, but about actually taking care of yourself. it's about seeing the bigger picture and take responsibility for how you want that picture to look like. selfcare is about doing things that may not be fun, but will save you a lot of grief. responsibility doesn't sound fun, but it can help you have calmer nerves and less fear of the future.
indulge yourself, but put taking care of yourself first.
