Afraid.org, FreeDNS and using Dropbox to determine the IP of a remote server
I use afraid.org for their free DNS services. I initially didn't quite know what I was doing when I set it up and I did so incorrectly. By editing this .plist file and replacing the "secretkey" line with your secret key as obtained from the freedns.afraid.org, a remote server will automatically update its dynamic IP when it is changed by your ISP. You just have to place the script in /Library/LaunchAgents/ on any OS X machine.
Unfortunately for me, I initially thought this secretkey was just my freedns URL. I quickly figured out that was wrong once my IP was changed by the ISP and I couldn't get at my server. It also wouldn't be very secure, since anyone could write their IP to my URL. Instead, you'll want to copy (don't click!) the "direct URL" link on the Dynamic DNS page and write that to the .plist file instead. All should work properly now.
Note: If you do click the link, you'll unfortunately overwrite your IP with your current one, which may not be what you meant to be. If you're like me, you also likely didn't have the previous IP saved anywhere. If you're also like me, you probably have Dropbox installed on the remote machine. If you log into Dropbox in the browser and then head to Settings > Security, you can view all the computers logged into your Dropbox account. Locate the computer in question, hover over the info logo and make note of the IP. You can then write this IP to your Free DNS record on afraid.org. Crisis averted!
